An afternoon in New Bedford

Please visit my traveler list detailing a visit to the historic area in New Bedford, MA.

We enjoyed a great day in New Bedford. Suggest that for visitors to Massachusetts looking for sites outside of Salem, Boston, Cambridge or Cape Cod consider a visit to New Bedford.

Nice suggestions, sedum. I really like the Whaling Museum.

May I add that this Portuguese feast with parade, great food and music is another good reason to visit New Bedford:

Also, let me put in a plug for the Zeiterion theater in New Bedford, which brings a wide variety of acts to the town:

It is even quite do-able to get down there from Boston to see a show on a work night (which, before we did it, I would have thought too tiring and too much traffic, but it isn't so bad at all).

Hope more tourists, and locals too, take a look at your suggestions and make the trip down there.

Thanks for looking! I really think New Bedford is an overlooked destination by tourists. I was surprised at what I found. There are areas of New Bedford undergoing transition but the downtown historic area is definitely worth a visit! It definitely reminds me of how Lowell MA developed.

We also want to visit the Rotch-Jones-Duff historic House and Gardens next time we go there.

If anyone is interested in coming down to New Bedford this weekend (we're 1 hr south of Boston) there is a working waterfront festival going on. Here's the link

Sedum!!!

Good to see you on the board, and what a nice daytrip report on New Bedford. There seems to be a lot to see and do down there with the Whaling Museum being one of the more popular places to visit.

Maybe New Bedford would be on more people's radar if there was a rail link connecting it from Boston. As it stands now, I think the rail terminates in Lakeville.

Anyways, it's nice to see you on here, and I'm happy you had a wonderful time in the Whaling City.

Like that is ever going to happen in my lifetime. Wishful thinking. We were going to get the train down here with the proposed casino in Fall River but now they said it's not going to happen. We always hear that around election time then for some reason or another it falls through.

Hi sedum37, thanks for the excellent recommendation to visit NB. As you found out, we are a great destination. The downtown has undergone a huge revival with the many art museums, restaurants, shops, and of course the Whaling Museum. There is also a brand new Marriott hotel on the waterfront within walking distance to the fast ferry to Martha's Vineyard. New Bedford also has a terrific zoo located in beautiful Buttonwood Park only about a mile from downtown. Summertime offers some really terrific festivals. There is Summerfest, the Portuguese Feast, Whaling City Festival, to name a few. Really worth a visit and please let me know if I can answer any questions you may have.

The Whaling Museum is very close to the Working Waterfront Festival. Just a block or so away.

What did you think of the festival? My whole family is in the fishing industry so seeing what they do isn't anything new for me. I was just wondering what you thought?

Which fort did you walk to, Fort Phoniex or Fort Tabor?
