How many do you want? It is only a small town. It is a Top 10 site which i have always found very good although I have not stayed at this one. There is another back in Franz Josef.

There's the Top 10, mentioned above, and sites at the Fox Glacier Inn. https://foxglacierinn.co.nz/camper-sites/

Rankers has reviews of campsites at Fox Glacier Lodge, but they don't show up on the lodge's website. https:/…2597-Fox_Glacier_Lodge http://www.foxglacierlodge.com

We stayed at the Top 10 in December of 2012 and it was very nice.

If the Top 10 at Fox Glacier is full, perhaps you could drive 70 Km south to Lake Paringa where there is a lovely DoC campsite:

Fox is a very small township. Once you get there you will perhaps appreciate that there is only one campsite. Franz is the bigger tourist town and has a number of options. However, one is still better than none!

There is a DOC camp (basic amenities, no power) at Gillespie Beach, 21km west of Fox on the coast- has magic sunset views of the mountains. The road is out past Lake Matheson and is narrow, don't drive it at night.

If we are wanting to sightsee this area for 2 days would you therefore suggest staying at Fox Glacier or franz Joset?

Hi Wendy

You really don't want to be driving back and forth. Best visit everything you want in Franz and stay the night, the following day drive to Fox and explore there before staying the night (or vise versa if heading northward).

Thanks I’ll look into these. We have been told that in NZ you can even just pitch up on side of road or in car parks do you know anything about this and whether it’s safe?

No, you cant just pitch anywhere on side of road or car parks, and it definitely isnt safe on the side of a road. Most local councils have freedom camping bylaws, and generally only approved self contained campers i.e. they have to have the official sticker) are permitted to freedom camp in designated areas, and usually a limit of vehicles etc. Otherwise you are usually camping illegally as it will breach laws relating to litter, rubbish and human waste.

Check each councils bylaws or you could end up with a vehicle clamp or hefy fine if you camp illegally.

There are many camping sites available throughout nz. DOC are basic and reasonable.
