Do we stay at Fox or Franz?

Hello,

Passing through for a night on to see the glaciers of course, and don't know what the difference is between the 2 townships for staying in? Does one have more than the other?

Cheers

Franz Josef is the larger of the two towns but both are small with permanant residents numbering just a few hundred. I personally prefer Fox but Franz offers a little bit more in terms of Restaurants etc.

Might be an arguable point but I believe the Fox Glacier is actually the easier to get to it is also less crowded but that's relative, neither is that busy.

Might depend a bit on which direction you are coming from and where you are going next.

to be honest, can't go wrong with either so not worth worrying about too much.

Hi,

You dont say when you are visiting. In the high season (mid dec - late feb) accomodation will be at a premium, so you may need to book early to ensure you have a bed to sleep in.

In franz joseph, you will find a great Doc ofice with interpretaion to the region, plus the only indoor ice climbing wall in the southern hemisphere.

helicoptor flights operate from both towns. Both Glaciers and towns are quite different to each other so hopefully you may get to se a wee bit of both of them

Hey,

Ok well in Sept things are going to be pretty dead on the West Coast, it really dies down in the winter months so no problem at all with accommodation. Coming from the north my thought's are that you should push on to Fox Glacier. Two reasons, first being that there is a particularly nasty section of road between the two villages so nice to get that out of the way and second it saves you 30 minutes from your travels the next day.

Glacier hikes generally depart twice a day morning and midday so aim for an afternoon hike if you are only coming from Hokitika. If you do travel from Westport that'll take all day so you will want to do a glacier walk on the morning you travel to Queenstown.

That of course assumes you are self driving? If you travel on public transport one night actually gives you no time at all to do any glacier stuff which defeats the purpose of coming to this area, if you are on the bus think about taking a 2 night stop.

Otherwise it should be a good time to come, spring time brings variable weather but just come prepared for a fair bit of rain and you'll be fine.

Check! Should have mentioned yes we are self driving also :)

My thought was to push through to Fox and have 1/2 hour less the next day.

Fantastic advice, thanks so much.

Other advantage of Fox is proximity to Lake Matheson for a quick evening stroll to see the sunset on the peaks.

Sept is pretty much our wettest month of the year, thats when most flooding occurs in the region with rain fall intensity in the vicinity of 25mm per hour.

so rather than just a jacket, make sure u have a good brollie too and sturdy foot wear.

dont attempt to drive through deep flood water if you ever encounter it

have a great holiday

Ok, so does the wet season apply to the entire west coast at that time, does that extend to Queenstown and Te Anau as well?

Queenstown /te Anau have a much lower rainfall than the west coast. milford sound and doubtfull sound share high rainfalls as well.

Sept is generaly very wet sometime it will rain 28 out of the 30 days.

make sure you have good rain coats and good footware so you can do some of the short tracks between showers
