Twin Glaciers Vs Fox Glacier plus Mt Cook, which better?

Hi appreciate someone advise me on followings. Thanks!

1. Twin Glaciers vs Fox Glacier/Mt Cook, which one is better? (With a 3 year old kid)

2. Plan to drive from Wanaka to Fox Glacier. Easy road to drive? Some calculator said need 3hrs 45mins, other said 2hrs50 mins. Any one know how long it takes?

3. Plan to go end-Apr/early May. Is it all year round to see the glacier or end Apr/early May not a good time?

To answer your questions : Fox Glacier/Mt Cook is better than Twin Glaciers, but it does depend on what you plan to do while there. The glaciers are viewable year round, but they are also so close to each other that you will probably end up staying in Franz Josef and visiting Fox glacier. The terminus of Fox Glacier is a shorter and easier walk than the terminus of Franz Josef. Kids under 10 are not allowed onto the Glaciers if you planned on taking a ice trekking trip.

Wanaka to Fox/Franz Josef took us most of the day - about 6.5 hours including stopping for the sheep on the road, lunch at a gorgeous little roadside cafe about halfway up there and a walk out to the Blue Pools

For question one, are you refering to a helicopter flight?

Mt Cook is a long way by road from Fox Glacier, and the two options can't really be compared without knowing the rest of your itinerary.

With a 3 year old, you will need to make lot's of stops between Wanaka and Fox Glacier. Plan on the drive taking you about 5 hours or more and make regular stops. The Blue Pools Walk, Fantail Falls, Thundercreek Falls, and Roaring Billy Falls, are all walks you could do with a 3 year old. Just keep him/her close to you as no NZ bushwalks are completely childproof.

By the way, you can see the glaciers all year round. The end of April is fine

A driver familiar with the road could do Wanaka to Fox in 3 hours 45 minutes but most visitors take closer to 6 hours. The road is extremely scenic with lots of waterfalls, short walks and scenic viewpoints, plus you will want to stop for lunch and the loo.

On top of that, the road is narrow, twisty and steep for much of the way plus there are about 20 one-lane bridges which need to be negotiated. Take notice of the signage for who gives way to whom. it is not a case of first there, first across.

Safe travels :)
