Hello Carole :)

The guided walk allows you to get far closer to the ice than the general public, though you won't be walking on the actual ice. If you really want to walk on the glacier then consider a heli-hike or scenic heli-flight.

The views from the helicopter are spectacular :)

Hi Carole -

I've walked to both glaciers many times, the most recent to Franz Josef in June. You must stay behind the ropes for your own safety, but you can still see the glacier really well and from several vantage points by freedom walking to the terminal face. The walk to Franz Josef is easier than the walk to Fox Glacier.

We took a helihike on Fox Glacier many years ago and it was incredible. You get a much better feel for what the glacer looks like from up top - it's prettier too, as it's glacial blue, not covered in dirt like it is is from below.

A follow up question...if one only can do the glacier valley hike, is it worth going to Franz Josef? We'd be driving from Queenstown and then going on to Arthur's Pass....staying a night in Queenstown. Are there other easy-moderate walks and things to see there in the park, if one does not go on the ice? Thanks!

Yes, it's worth going. We've done the glacier valley hike many times and we never get tired of it. The West Coast is gorgeous and worth the effort for the scenery alone! There are loads of hiking trails along the West Coast, several of which are in the vicinity of Franz/Fox. You'll need at least one night at the glaciers if driving from QT to Arthur's Pass. I recommend a minimum of two though, which will give you a full day to explore.
