Suggestions please for our stay in Albuquerque

We are looking to travel from the East for our 30th anniversary to Albuquerque, NM in Sept. This will be our first trip to NM and we are looking to stay in a beautiful place that is romantic and offers lovely amenities. Any suggestions???

We plan to fly in & have a rental car. Can you offer suggestions of "must see" places to visit & places to eat? Also, how many days should be allow to see these sites? Would you recommend side trips to Taos & Santa Fe?

Thanks to all for your much needed help & suggestions!!!

Hmm... well it all depends what kind of place you want to stay in. ABQ has some very nice B&Bs that you might look into. For hotels in the hIgh end I would suggest the Hyatt Tamaya Resort (actually North of ABQ), Marriott Pyramid, Embassy Suites, etc. For resonably price hotels I would look into the Nativo Lodge, Courtyard, Drury Inn and the like.

A Must see would have to be Old Town and if you want to stay there I would recommend The Hotel Albuquerque. The Petroglyphs are cool. Ofcourse the Tram and Sandia Peak is a must see. What do you guys enjoy? Its hard to give recommendations with out having a bit of a background of tastes-- for expample if you love Art, New Mexico is the place.

Places to eat ( For full meals): Church Street Cafe, Sadie's and Gardunos.

For a full lunch I would recommend something like Durans Central Cafe--drab atomosphere great food.

For a quick lunch (15 mins) I would recommend Chilacas, La Hacienda Express, Dos Hermanos.

For breakfast or lunch I would absolutly recommend a stop at The Frontier.

I do recommend side trips to Santa Fe and Taos. While eating in Santa Fe I would recommend The Shed--amazing!!!

I hope this helps.

ABQ...thanks so much for your great suggestions! We will take some side trips to Santa Fe & Taos as well as tour Albuquerque. Since one entire day will be travel(flying in from the East), how many days of touring is reasonable....is 4 days enough, excluding our travel days(2) to & from our home? Again, thanks for your help.

Keep Traveling & Smiling, too!

4 days is probably enough for ABQ but I would include other days for Santa Fe and Taos.

I was in Albuquerque last year for a conference (no car). I stayed at the sheraton (i think?). anyway, big hotel very nearby old town that I do not recommend. But I do recommend old town, very nice. My husband and I just booked a trip in August and I made reservations at the Brooks Street Inn in Taos. I adored Taos, and didn't get enough time there last time we went about ten years ago. The woman that booked my reservations was exceptionally nice and the inn the highly recommended on this site.

Albuquerque is OK, but has more than it's share of crime and seediness. It's plenty safe enough, just not as sweet as Taos, or Santa Fe. I would not recommend staying in Albuquerque more than day or so. Since you have a car, you should get out and take a couple of road trips. Yes definately plan on Santa Fe, and Taos!

Quick question...since we will be getting a rental car at the Albuquerque airport, how long of a drive is it to Sante Fe & Taos? Are the roads a problem during "rush" hour? Thank you!

Definetly look into Los Poblanos Inn on Rio Grande Blvd. I bet they have a web-sight. It is amazing...very romantic. As far as places to eat, I always head to the Nob Hill area of Alb, check out Scalo or Kelleys, which are on Central Avenue, west of Carlisle. My favorite New Mexican restaurant is closer to the University (Harvard and Silver) called El Patio. Take a ride on the tram up to the top of the Sandia Mts, or drive around the back side up to the crest, the trails up there are beautiful- hike to the old rock house(there are plenty of trail maps)

I live downtown and still don't recommend going there...it is up-and-coming but still seedy(however, the Standard Diner just opened in east downtown , and it is great). For the old route 66 Diner experience, the Route 66 Diner is very fun and friendly.

Do check out Old Town, though, and eat at Church St. Cafe or Season's for dinner. Take a short driveon Rio Grande to Corrales, a little town bordering the northern part of Alb. Check out the Tijuana Bar (Good food), and shops/galleries. I would definetly go to Santa Fe and Taos. Have Fun!

Okay the drive from the Sunport to Santa Fe should be an Hour tops.

Replying to Catgrrl's comment about only spending a day in ABQ would make it very hard to experience the REAL Albuquerque. Most visitors come and don't know about anything other than Old Town, Sandia Tram, Balloon Fiesta, and The Petroglyphs. But trust me there is much more--you just have to look a bit harder.

You are probably right. My husband loves the Nobb Hill area. I've not been there myself. I am such a fan of the wide open vistas so I am partial to road trips. Albuquerque to Santa Fe is about an hour. Santa Fe to Taos is about another hour. Ten Thousand Waves is a spa in Santa Fe that is very cool.
