Either. How long are you visiting? Budget? Who is visiting? Check www.santafe.org and www.itsatrip.org for information on both cities. Also you may want to add in Taos for a day trip or even and overnight.

1 week, just my husband and I, will stay at a B & B, with a few day trip splurges. Wanted to float Rio Grand but have heard it is very low right now. Day trip to Taos, White Sands, Day trip into dessert possible.

I would plan on staying in Santa Fe as a base to see the sights in Northern New Mexico...Taos, Bandelier. If you want to do a day trip to White Sands, then starting from Albuquerque will be a shorter drive, but still long. I would think about spending a night in Alamogordo or Las Cruces and visiting the dunes either very early in the morning or in the evening. We are already in the high desert, so not sure what desert you want to visit. The Rio Grande is very low but I'm sure there are areas you can take a float trip. Check with a few of the outfitters. http://santaferafting.com/ http://www.kokopelliraft.com/

I think there are more B&B options in Santa Fe, but Albuquerque is worth visiting for a few days. Check these links www.santafe.org and www.itsatrip.org for ideas etc.

Dining options are huge in both cities. Make sure you try a green chile cheeseburger (if you drive to White Sands, stop in the small town of San Antonio for one at The Owl or at Manny's).
