Awesome--we are headed there tomorrow from Dallas and will be very cool to see in person!!! Can you see them from town, or do you need to go into the park?

They wander all over Estes Park in the town itself, usually. But don't approach them!! They are also rutting here in Evergreen this week.

You can definitely see them in town, that video on the website was partially filmed at the golf course right in town.

The best places I've been to see/hear/experience the elk rut are inside the park, in the Moraine and Horseshoe Park, both at dawn and dusk. The rangers have a handout with the locations marked on a map, available at the entrance. Many people park along the side of the road and bring out their lawn chairs and binoculars to get a good view. It truly is one of nature's most awesome events! I'll be there Oct. 11 for our annual autumn long weekend!

Thanks for the quick responses! Any other "can't-miss" things we should do? We'll be there until Sunday.

Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road are both open at the moment and the weather forecast looks favorable that they'll both stay open through the weekend. A trip to the top of the park to the Alpine Visitor's Center provides the best mountain views anywhere. Wear warm clothing, though; it's mighty cold and windy up there any time of year!

A great place to hike is from one of the trails at Bear Lake - Nymph/Dream/Emerald Lakes is an easier route that provide great scenery. The aspen trees should be starting to change into their falls colors about now, so the hiking should be spectacular!

We will be out there starting on the weekend of Oct 3rd. Will the Elk Rut still be going on??

Also, what is the Elk Fest all about?

Thanks in advance!

There should be plenty of rutting going on in Estes well into October, so you'll be able to get a chance to see/hear it. I haven't been to the Elk Fest myself, but here's a webpage that tells all about it:

Sounds great! Glad to hear that it's still happening in October. We've seen the beginnings of the Rut a few years ago in September. It was cool!

Also, thanks for the Link to the Elk Fest Shaken Bake!
