Hwy 36 Estes Park to Lyons under repair - detour advised

From CDOT -

"The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration - Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) are combining expertise and resources to design and construct the final repairs on US 36 between Lyons and Estes Park following the devastating 2013 flood. Work on the emergency repairs is now underway."

"Construction activities should be anticipated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., and again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., delays will be minimal to accommodate the morning and evening commutes. Between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. crews will be working on the roadway, and a typical one hour stop should be expected at any given time. On weekends, work will take place throughout the day, but stop times will be kept to 30 minutes, although night work is possible. Either a pilot car or flaggers will escort motorists through the construction zone for safety purposes. Crews will try to avoid all work on major holidays, but work will take place on weekends and evenings."

"Several planned, multi-hour closures will take place throughout the project to allow for more large-scale blasting activities. Seven days of advanced notice will be provided to allow motorists to plan ahead accordingly. Altogether, there will be 20 different three hour full closures, 10 different two hour full closures, and 10 different night time full closures. The night time full closures will last from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m."

"The delays and closures on US 36 will greatly impact traffic, and CDOT is strongly recommending the use of US 34 between Loveland and Estes Park, and SH 7 between Estes Park and Lyons as alternate routes for those who can use them."

Repairs will be ongoing through winter 2014.

"Further information about the project is also available on the project website at coloradodot.info/projects/floodrelatedprojec…

Information about weekly lane closures will be available at coloradodot.info/travel/scheduled-lane-closu…

Live road conditions are available at www.cotrip.org or by calling 511 from anywhere in the state."

Just got this email

THREE HOUR FULL CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY JAN. 29

BOULDER, LARIMER COUNTIES - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration - Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) are strongly urging motorists to travel on State Highway 7 between Lyons and Estes Park, as delays are lengthening due to the heavy volume of traffic on the corridor. As part of the US 36 Emergency Flood Reconstruction project, blasting will be taking place next week, which will require the first of 20 different three hour full closures of the highway.

This coming week, crews will also be performing excavation and embankment work, which will cause major delays for motorists traveling through the area. The following delays should be expected this week on US 36 between Lyons and Estes Park:

· Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.: Stops of 10 minutes

· Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Stops of one hour

· Monday through Friday, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night: Stops of 30 minutes

· Wednesday, January 29 from 9 a.m. to noon: Three hour full closure of US 36 in both directions just west of mile marker (MM) 11, which is also west of Pinewood Springs and southeast of Estes Park. Motorists will need to use alternate routes, especially via State Highway 7 between Lyons and Estes Park, as no through traffic will be allowed during the closure and major delays are expected!

· Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Stops of 30 minutes

This work is supposed to continue through Winter 2014. CDOT is generally very efficient and I would not be surprised if they finish earlier than the projected date. Instead of using highway 36 between Lyons and Estes Park, you can travel 1) highway 7 between Lyons and Estes Park, 2) highway 34 from Loveland to Estes Park or 3) highway 119 through Boulder Canyon to the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (highway 72 to 7) to Estes Park.
