A couple of hours for side trip, need advice...

(reposting from Newport forum)

I am flying into Providence with a coworker. We're attending a meeting at Foxwoods, CT. We are arriving at 2:30 the afternoon before the meeting starts the next day. How long would it take to drive from Providence airport to Newport, then from Newport to Foxwoods?

Also, if you had a couple of hours in Newport in mid-April, how would you spend your time?

Any other suggestions of how to utilize our time that afternoon, please let me know. I was just thinking Newport might be the most interesting but there may be some other places as well.

Hello Seeking,

From Green State Airport (actually in Warwick, RI) to Newport would be about a 45 minute drive. From Newport to Foxwoods in Ledyard,CT would be about 1 hour and 15 min. drive.

As far as spending your time in Newport, mid April, it depends on the weather and what you like. If weather is good and you want to be outside, I'd suggest the Cliff Walk http://www.cliffwalk.com/ or just shopping, lunching, etc. along the waterfront on Thames St. If weather is bad or you are interested, the mansions are always a classic thing to do in Newport and visiting them is interesting and amazing.

Also, the Tennis Hall of Fame is a nice way to spend some time.

There is plenty to do in the area, you might look at Mystic, CT. Close to Foxwoods and a very beautiful, quaint town with an aquarium, lots of shopping and Mystic Seaport.

Hope it helps. :)

If you only have a couple hours I would go check out Mystic instead of Newport --- it is on the way you'll be driving to Foxwoods and has loads of small town waterfront charm. Great museum too.

If you take a look at a map you'll see that driving to Newport from the airport (which is south of Prov on rte 95) involves crossing over Narragansett Bay twice or else driving north through Providence, East Providence, etc & then down a peninsula & onto an island to get there. You're adding quite a bit of driving time when you only have an afternoon, and that is if the plane lands on time. Newport is great & has many charms but I would save them for another trip & enjoy an afternoon in Mystic -- maybe dinner in one of their seafood places too, before going on to Foxwoods.

The other poster is right on about the weather -- could be miserable & raw, could be sunny & warm--- in Mystic if it is raw you have the museum to check out.

Have fun!

With only a few hours Mystic is a great suggestion. We stayed last fall for a long weekend there. Lots to do, some good restaurants, a neat drawbridge to watch in action. Mystic is about 30-45 minutes from Foxwoods (we passed by Foxwoods on our way to Mystic but didn't stop).

If your into beaches, Narragansett would be a good choice, there are a lot of good resturants there too.
