One day in Providence - top 5 sights/attractions???

Hi,

Hubby & I are off to Providence for a quick one day drive from Boston next weekend...can anyone suggest the top 5 things to see/do in a day?

Not sure we can get through all of them however any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Ps....if anyone knows of a good spot to check out the changing of the leaves on the drive from Boston that would be awesome too!

Thanks so much!

Providence is very compact and maneageable. Not sure what your interests are but the Colonial historic architecture is what makes Providence beautiful and unique, the neighborhoods and area around RISD and Brown University (College Hill) and where it borders downtown along the river, all considered the East Side. Then, it's really just the great restaurants (just got #3 rating in US for foodies) which are scattered downtown, and on the cities West Side, where Federal Hill is, the "Italian" section of the city, where there are many restaurants and several Italian deli/markets, visually the Hill is nothing too special however. Unless you wanted to spend a few hours in the RISD museum, or tour the John Brown house, you could have lunch and do the city in 3 hours, really. Are you sure you don't want to go to Newport instead? ; you could really make a long day of it there as there is so much to see and do and it's just an half hour more from Boston, not that Providence isn't beautiful too.

The leaves won't have changed color by next weekend. There isn't much of anything of interest between Prov and Boston on 95. To Newport one would take route 24, an easy drive .

Rhode Island Historical Society has a guided tour of the Benefit St. area - you can do just the walk or combine it with a tour of the John Brown House.

rihs.org

or just walk Benefit St. on your own - beautiful architecture.

Nice restaurants on that side of town.

Also great restaurants in the Federal Hill area. Pastiche for dessert or late afternoon cup of cof. and treat (eclair!).

Johnson & Wales has a one of a kind culinary museum - you'd have to drive - Harborside Campus.

The leaves are beginning to turn, so you may get the sense of it - its epected to be muted this year.

I second the suggestion you spend the day in Newport instead. There you can tour a mansion, a colonial neighborhood, take a sail (may options for getting out on the water) shop, dine and take a ride along Ocean Drive, one of the most scenic roads in New England, walk along Cliff Walk.. and it's all within a few square miles. Traffic will be much more manageable as well.

Next week the foliage is north of Boston, not down here. We only have the beginnings going on right now, mostly along rivers.

if you like Feasts, people watching, and Italian food, Federal Hill will be a top spot Columbus Day weekend..Feast is going on Sat, Sun, and Monday... Atwells will be closed for cars and parking can be a nuisance.. so your best bet would be to park Hilton (at the bottom of Atwells on the other side of the highway) and walk up to the feast.

I won't insult you by saying to "go somewhere else".

To answer your question: (some hit parts of these)

1. Benefit Street and the RISD Museum

2. Atwells Avenue

3. Providence Place area and the State Capitol

4. Roger Williams Park

5. Slater Mill Museum in Pawtucket- very historic

all are reviewed and well-documented on TA.

I wonder if you were to hit the Newport forum, would they suggest you visit Providence?
