Girls weekend away

My girlfriends and I will be staying in Providence for a weekend this summer. There are 4 of us and we will be celebrating a few birthdays. We are middle age but young at heart! We would like to maybe see a comedy show or a murder mystery dinner one night and a restaurant for our 2nd night that we can sit outside and enjoy the waterfires. Also, during the day, I know there are nice walking tours available. I believe I saw something about segway tours as well, not sure if these are rated well or not. Are there also bike or kayak rentals? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Couple of suggestions for you: check the Waterfire.org schedule to make sure there will be a Waterfire when you are there and what night it is. I don't know how you would plan to kayak in the city but you might want to put a search for kayak rentals in Rhode Island and plan to drive well out side the city to do this. The beaches are awesome in RI- you could drive to Narragansett and have a great day time trip there.

Prov is very walkable and very hilly so plan to walk the hills around Brown University. I always go on my own (I live in Foxboro) but I bet a search will come up with a good walking tour for you.

The only comedy club I personally know of is right outside the main part of the city and you would need to drive but maybe someone will know of something closer. Did you check the PPAC website for shows that weekend?

If you plan to do dinner along the Waterfire route, see if you can get reservations as its a very, very popular thing to do and I can only personally think of one spot, Café Nuavo I think that is right along the canal. Haven't been in about a year but assume the name is the same? Have fun, its a great little city

May I suggest you and your girl friends go for a Gondola ride? If you happen to stay on the weekend of Waterfire, you do need to book well in advance, although there are other options such as Providence River Boat Company. I recommend a water tour rather than a segway tour as it is a unique way to explore the city inspired by the canals of Venice.

As for kayaking, I've seen residents kayak but they are likely members of the Community Boating Center. I don't know if this is accessible to non-members but worth inquiring if you are intent on kayaking. communityboating.com/about/news_kayaks.html

During the day, I suggest visiting RISD museum which has everything from Degas to Designer Gowns! Take the trolley or private car to Federal Hill and enjoy a taste of Italy at Vende Ravioli. Sit and relax outside at DePasquale Square than head to Pastiche, a European bakery (right around the corner) for the best desserts in town. Than stroll Atwells and check out all the shops and boutiques. Like anyone poster mention, Providence is a very walkable city! But if your legs get tired, call a pedicab, another great way to see the city.

Oh and yeah there's also the Providence Place Mall if you want to do some serious shopping. For local shopping check out Westminster Street and the like (downtown) Atwells/Federal Hill (near downtown) Hope Street and Wickenden Street (near RISD and Brown University)

For shows, PPAC or Trinity Rep (both located in downtown). Fine dining check out Gracie's in downtown Providence. Jackie's Waterplace, Cafe Nuovo or Hemengways for views of Waterfire.

Waterfire also has food trucks and food vendors too so you can have a light dinner and fill up later on everything from grilled pizza, kabobs, lobsta rolls to Indian cuisine at the food stalls. :-)
