Lubec - Buggy?

Lubec looks beautiful! We want to rent a waterfront cottage the last two weeks of August. Several in our party are worried about mosquitos and other flying critters. Is this a problem?

Last summer we stayed at Lake Champlain and found we could not go outside at night without being inundated by flying insects.

Thanks!

I am by no means an expert on the Lubec area. However, I've been there a few times---mostly around the time you identify---and I've never encountered "bug" problems when hiking or kayaking. If one ventures into wetlands or along lowland streams, there's always the possibility of seeing a few troublesome insects but generally, late August the coast is pretty much bug-free..

That being said, there is a broad spectrum of tolerance to mosquitoes, etc. If there are those in your party to whom one "bite" constitutes a problem, then they might not be happy anywhere in Maine in the summer.

I don't think you'll have a problem with mosquitos in a waterfront cottage. The sea breezes usually blow them away. I live in Bar Harbor, a bit down the coast from Lubec, and have never been much bothered by mosquitos unless hiking in a swampy area. The problem is nothing like Lake Champlain or Wisconsin, where I grew up.

dear lagasan, usually around the warter here the bugs arent to thick, however, in the evening if you're out the road or get out along a back road, u will be suffocated by bugs, especailly mosquitoes.

There will be almost no bugs in August during the day and generally the closer to the ocean you are the less there are. If you were going to be here in say early June I would advised you to go into lockdown if you have a low tolerence for bugs but by August there will be few. It is true that along near dark once the heat of the day diminishes there will still be some mosquitos and in a few places quite a few but you should be fine. If you should happen to have a night where they are more than you can handle then just go inside but I'm betting that for the most part you will not even notice.
