Chiricahua National Monument

Is it realistic to plan to go to Chiricahua National Monument in late December, or is snow common there at that time of year?

P.S How long is the drive (in time) from tucson? And is the scenic drive in the park a real nerve-racking one or pretty tame?

Chiricahua NM is a gem and often overlooked. Last time we visited in october and that was a perfect time of year for it. There can be snowstorms up in the mountains in this park in december so check weather at www.az511.com Depending on where you come from Tucson it's a 2-2.5 hours drive to the nice Chiricahua NM visitor center. Roads can be narrow at places but not hard to drive unless in snowy conditions of course. Many hiking trails.

Some narrow roads inside the NM. The drive from Tucson to Willcox and from Willcox to the NM are flat and easy.

The snow is typically a little higher up than where the national monument gets, but it does snow there. However, it's unlikely it will affect your travel, as the road into the monument is paved and, when necessary, plowed.

Very likely it will be sunshine mostly in southern Arizona, this time of the year, otherwise, expect drizzles and/or some sleet.

I would anticipate that to happen, otherwise, as been stated plan ahead by watching the forecast for storm fronts coming from Mexico (Southwestern) into Southern Arizona and New MExico.

Contact the NPS - Coronado National Monument for further questions as well.

If you can manage to visit, it would be a spectacular view from the top (saddle) of looking across the border into Mexico.

SOrry....you stated Chiricahaua NOT Coronado....The Chiricahaus are further Northeast from SIerra Vista, on a different mountain range.

Any weather fronts (if any) would surely go through the CHiracahaus as well. Again, plan by calling ahead or watching weather reports....

Chiracahua National Monument is in the southeast corner of Arizona, east of Sierra Vista but generally the route from Tucson would be through Willcox on I-10. It is part of the Coronado National Forest. For road conditions in the Chiracahuas, call the Douglas Ranger District, (520) 364-3468, at the time of your visit. Weather forecasts for nearby cities can be completely different than conditions 5-6000 feet higher in the mountains.
