Simple-

You want remote. St Croix Falls is 1 hour from a major metropolitan area. Webster is 2 hours away. Therefore, Webster will have a greater chance of being remote.

You should consider other factors besides remoteness/distance of town from Minneapolis-St. Paul, IMO. Your "woodsy lake" experience will be affected by the size of the lake and amount of development (and thus boat/jet ski traffic) on it. Ask the renters about the lake's boat traffic, what surrounds your property, etc. What you might want to consider is how much time you want to spend on trips and what you want to do-- and what time of year you'll visit.

Keep in mind wildlife won't just emerge from the woods to parade about your deck's view in either place. Despite the love for Webster, St. Croix Falls area has many plusses-- perhaps more farms and clearings to see wildlife compared to straight woods, canoeing the St. Croix River, hiking and visiting the Ice Age Trail and Interstate State Parks (incl. Minnesota side), the Aveda Spa Osceola, Osceola & St Croix Valley Railway and Trollhagen south on Hwy 35, and Wild Mountain just across in Taylor's Falls, MN.

I will say Webster is more remote and offers nice scenery and a nice day or overnight trip to Duluth-Superior.
