My hotel is in Woburn and we were going to drive to Salem. Is there any mass transportation from Woburn or is it better to drive?
Woburn to Salem there is no MA transportation option I know of that would be logical. Unfortunately the MA transportation options for Salem would require you go back into Boston (from Woburn) and then out from Boston to Salem so it wouldn't be very direct. Driving from Woburn to Salem is pretty straightforward.
You have the right idea thinking about public transportation to Salem as the traffic into Salem in October is heavy and parking is difficult. Unfortunately, there's no public transportation there directly from Woburn. You would need to take the train (commuter rail) from Woburn to Boston (North Station) and then another train out to Salem. An alternative would be to drive to one of the stations on the Salem rail line (the Newburyport/Rockport line), park, and take the train to Salem. Montserrat (Beverly), North Beverly, and Lynn are possibilities. However, the trains run on a schedule and are not frequent, especially on the weekend. They also don't run very late at night, although those going north (toward Beverly) run a bit later than those going back into Boston (toward Lynn). For train schedules and parking information:
For Salem driving and parking information:
no, you should drive.
