Salem in a day is very doable. The Downtown area is very compact.

You can see plenty of Salem in a day. Besides its association with the witchcraft hysteria of the 1690s, Salem offers beautiful architecture (walk or drive down Chestnut Street) and an important place in maritime history (Salem Maritime National Historic Park and the Peabody Essex Museum may be of interest).

You might want to ditch the car and take the ferry to Salem. Or even the train. The ferry is very scenic and takes about 1/3 hour each way. . Be sure to see the National Maritime Park and adjoining Pickering Wharf. If you do drive to Salem, ditch the car and plan to walk everywhere, or take the trollley tour around Salem and get the most bang for your buck. Congrats on coming to Salem in Sept. The weather is usual gorgeous and the crowds have not arrived in droves.

thank you "leaf" for the info.... we will probably drive to salem and park the car. are there places to park the car and walk around salem to sightsee? if we are not able to do this, then we may take the ferry.

Parking shouldn't be a problem in September. There are two good-sized garages, including one by the Visitor Center. The rates are low (especially compared to Boston!). With a bit of luck, you may also find a metered space on the street. Hope you will enjoy!

Salem is very doable in a day..and there is plenty of parking. I would recommend the Museum parking garage..near the Peabody Essex Museum. I think this may be the same one 128north is referring to since it is also next to the visitor's center. You can park all day there for around $12 and it is pretty centrally located.

Touring all the historic homes is a lot of fun. If time permits..take a walk through the Peabody Essex ..it really is a gem. Dinner at Finz on Pickering Wharf will be a great way to top off the day.
