One Sunday in Salem with an 8-y.o. girl?

We'll be staying in Peabody, either Marriott or Springhill Suites in early April, and we'll only have one day to see/walk/drive around the town. Interested in any adivce you guys could offer that would keep our kid (and us) occupied:). Last time I was in Salem was about 10 years ago, so the only things I remember are the Witches Museum and a great restaurant in front of the beautiful harbour. Also, what might the parking situation be in Salem on Sunday? Thanks.

Welcome back to Salem! Besides its association with the witch trials history, the city has a long maritime tradition. Two places to learn more about the maritime history are the Peabody Essex Museum and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. The Peabody Essex often has programs geared to families on the weekend; check the calendar for more information. Most kids are fascinated by the Museum's Chinese house, Yin Yu Tang, which was disassembled in China and reassembled in the Museum. The National Historic Site has rangler-led tours. Unfortunately the tall ship Friendship is undergoing repairs and may not be back in Salem by early April. Check the Site's website for the current status. The NPS Visitors Center is across from the Peabody Essex and may be a good place to start your day.

Not sure where you ate on your previous visit, but it sounds like it may have been a restaurant on Pickering Wharf. Victoria Station or Finz perhaps ? Both are still operating. Salem has many other restaurants, too--lots of good eating these days!

I don't think you'll have trouble parking on an April Sunday. You may get lucky and find a spot on the street. Meters aren't enforced on Sunday. If you don't find a space on the street, you can park in one of the municipal lots or garages. I'll include a link to a parking map.

She also might really enjoy a trip to the Beehive gift shop on Front Street near Sweet Maria's ice cream shop (with the big ice cream cone out front). Just has a lot of cool, silly thing items to laugh at. Give us an idea if she has any special hobbies or interests. Enjoy!
