2nd time to SA what is fun

My husband and I are planning on being in SA at the end of May for our second trip. The first time has been about 6 years ago. So we did all the tourist attractions than. We are staying at O'Briens are trying to find other things to see and do while there. We hope we are close to the riverwalk but we will have our car so we can go off the riverwalk. We like good beer, entertainment, and cheap good food. Looking for bars, restaurants, and fun things to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings from an ex-Amarillo resident!

Living in god-forsaken Laredo for 5 years, my wife and used to go to SA every couple of weeks. If it has been 6 years, you'll want to do the Riverwalk again (of course). It get's old if you see it 3-4 time s year, but it's still fun.

Some suggestions:

Activities:

The Zoo-quite nice, similar to Fort Worth's, though not quite as nice. Ride the train around the park to the Witte Museum.

The Mission Trail-rent bikes and ride to see all the other missions besides the Alamo. The trail generally parallels the San Antonio river; one of the missions is still serving as a church. This is a Nat'l Historic Monument, so there are park rangers to show you around.

Good Beer:

Go to Central Market on Broadway to buy some for hotel/home. Similar to Market Street in Amarillo, but much, much larger

Chester's-great burgers, tons of beers

Schilo's-German on the river, by the Hilton. Good German beers on tap. Cheap food.

Restaurants:

Sea Island Shrimp House (5? locations)-good, fresh, sea food. Counter service.

Tomatillo's (on Broadway)-good Mexican. Inexpensive. Owned by the folks that run La Fogata, but much less crowded and easier to find.

Earl Able's (on Broadway)-old-style comfort food. Good fried chicken and baked goods

La Paloma Blanca (on Broadway)-good mexican in serene surroundings. Great enchiladas verdes.

Rosario's just south of downtown is our very favorite Mexican restaurant. Mexican restaurants on the river tend to be mediocre and overpriced, though Manhattan Mexican Restaurant near the west end of the Riverwalk has a nice quiet patio and excellent, reasonably priced food. For music and nightlife, check out Sunset Station just east of downtown. Casbeer's on Blanco is a ways away from downtown but has some of the best music around. Lion and Rose in Alamo Heights, north of downtown is a new place with a terrific selection of beers and wonderful pub curries. Also has music on weekends. You might also like one of the local dancehalls, like Gruene's outside New Braunfels or Floore's Country Store on Old Bandera Road. Both are a bit of a drive but worth it if there's music there you want to hear. The hotel should be able to tell you who's playing where. Hope you have fun!
