Which location to stay while in San Antonio for a weekend?

Will be in San Antonio for 3 nights on a weekend, arriving Saturday, departing late Tuesday. Which neighborhood, or area should we stay? Is there any particular area, or does it not matter? Maybe Hill Country area, or is the Riverwalk area a must? We will have a rental car. Appreciate any information and why, thanks.

Just 3 nights? Stay central. Definitely the riverwalk area. Will cost you a bit to park the car but not much compared to New Orleans, New York, or Boston!

Really depends on what you want to do.

Riverwalk, Alamo, Bars and Restaurants - you can stay downtown.

Gruene Hall, Natural Bridge caverns - stay north east or Airport area

Golf - north central or at one of the resorts

Sea World - north west side of town

Thanks for the replies. I am traveling with my Mom and an aunt. They're older and will not be up for bars and such. I am up for Sea World, but unfortunately they are not, and I don't think they're much into art museums. All such things would be great for me, but taking them around to show them San Antonio, what they're not interested in does limit my options. Fortunately, there are many activities they would like such as Riverwalk, Alamo, Gruene, Natural Bridge Caverns. Appreciate all information. thanks so much.

I would definitely advise staying on the Riverwalk, both for the great restaurants and views along the San Antonio River, and because it gives you a chance - if you wish - to take the lovely river cruise twice - once in daylight and then again when the Riverwalk is lit up after dark. Some great peoplewatching while dining outside, with the tour boats and dinner cruises with Mariachi bands floating by.

Do note that, in my brief experience, it will be "jumping" a bit more on weekends, so you might want to take into account whether or not this is a plus or minus for your Mom and Aunt. If you're lucky, there might be a performance at the ampitheatre going on as you float by!

Yes, stay downtown on the Riverwalk. Is it a must? Yes, in my opinion it's a must. Look at YouTube videos of the Riverwalk areas. It's gorgeous!

When are you coming? The reason I ask is that we can let you know if there are any great events that weekend such as big art/craft show, food festival etc. Thanks

I have some restaurant suggestions for you, but can't post them untill next week.

I would stay at the Riverwalk for the central location. Close by the Alamo, La Villita, El Mercado, and King William district to name a few.

I don't live at San Antonio but take friends who have never been to San Antonio to the Riverwalk to see the Alamo, take the boat tour, eat Mexican food, and walk a few blocks along the river so I would suggest a hotel downtown. I HATE driving downtown so we park and walk.

Events week you are coming and a few restaurant suggestions.

FYI: you may not want to attend, but I wanted to tell you that there is a huge Beer Festival at 1pm in Hemisphere Park downtown so there will be lots of people. It ends at 6pm.

I highly recommend the Witte Museum:

http://schilos.com Good casual food downtown, popular with Senior Citizens

The Sheraton Gunter across from Majestic Theatre has wonderful bakery for an afternoon or morning pit stop. I'm 70 and I love it! 205 E. Houston Street

Hop on the streetcar and go to the huge Mexican Mercardo and dine in the famous Mi Tierra restaurant or go into its lobby for pastries to go and look around if you don't want to dine there.

Lastly the Rivercenter Mall has an IMAX theatre with great movie about the Alamo, also a food court and outside the doors of the food court are about 10 restaurants, ice cream, Starbucks etc. Also, a boarding area and ticket venue for the famous Riverboat cruise.
