Where is best BBQ in San Antonio?

Anything somewhat close to the RW or within walking distance or short cab ride? Want some great BBQ while we are there. Don't see much on the internet surprisingly.

My favorite is Bolner's a short cab ride away but they only serve lunch. You will not find many tourists inthis meat market/BBQ joint, just great BBQ.

The Granary gets some great reviews but I have not tried it. It is walkable in the Pearl Complex at the end of the Museum Reach section of the Riverwalk. I have a very hard time paying high dollar for BBQ, regardless of the presentation and ambiance.

There are some other decent BBQ places in the city but not near downtown. Of course, any time you mention Texas BBQ you will get a myriad of different opinions on the subject. You may have opened a can of worms here!

Last week Octoboy recommend the Smoke Shack which is across the street from Witte Museum and is very easy to get to by VIA city bus service. It opened 3 months ago and I ate there last Thursday and was very impressed. Brisket was my favorite. Melted in my mouth. Be advised it is order at the counter and the dining room is very small and fills up very fast at noon rush hour. I arrived at 11am and saw about 10 guests throughout the room. When I left at 11:50 the line was almost out the door. Just inside the front door is a tiny bar with man selling cold bottles of beer to enjoy if you have to stand in line. My table was very close to the cashier and I kept hearing a lot of orders for just the turkey. Will try that on next visit.

I love the Witte Museum which is across the street.

In addition to several different VIA busses that go back and forth on Broadway to downtown, there is a special tourist bus they have developed to take people out Broadway to Brackenridge Park, Zoo, Witte, Arboretuem and SA Museum of Art

Do you know that across the street from The Alamo is the SA visitors center with very friendly volunteers to answer questions, free maps, free brochures etc? Since you have no car they can answer any questions about VIA bus routes and give you VIA brochures.

Here's another one in the Southtown District (trolley ride away from Dtown):

I have eaten at the Granary, Smoke Shack and B&D ice house. B&D will be closest to downtown and long walking distance, joint venture between Two Bros BBQ & The Friendly Spot - SoSo BBQ. Granary also SoSo, but listed as a Texas Monthly top BBQ joint. Smoke Shack is very very good, on the plates - a little light on the meat, large sides. There are some other ok spots, near downtown.
