whale watching

I'm spending 1 day at San Juan Island, and 1 day at orcas end of July. Which is the best way to see the whales kayaking or whale charter boats? Which is the better island or harbor to take a tour from? Thanks, Mary

to have the biggest chance of seeing orcas, you would need to be on a boat that can go where they are on a given day, assuming they are in range--sometimes they are not. it's much more random to see them via kayak--you'd have to hope they are in the area right at the time you're on the kayak trip since you can't go very far in a kayak compared to a motor boat.

generally san juan would be the better island to go from as the orcas tend to be found most often in the haro strait between san juan and victoria--but they have a large range for feeding so there are no guarantees.
