Friday harbor in mid June

We are considering a trip to Friday Harbor for a long weekend. Should we take the ferry from Seattle or from where would you suggest? We can fly into Seattle or Vancouver. Loved taking ferry to Whidbey Island from Seattle when we did that trip. Is Friday Harbor like Whidbey island? What will the weather be like in mid June (June 15 weekend?) and will it be possible to see whales at that time of the year?

Hold on, you need to do some research about the San Juans. Traveling to the SJIs on a weekend in the summer can be tedious as they are very popular summer destinations. The ferries get crowded, and you need to arrive long in advance. Lodging on the islands gets booked up, too. There is no ferry from Seattle. You have several other ferry choices but they all mean fairly long drives and long waits. Anacortes is perhaps your best bet. If time is tight, and you don't want to deal with ferries, consider flying. Kenmore Air flies to Friday Harbor, and they are a great outfit. The flight is short and beautiful.

The weather should be cool and probably fairly dry. Even though June tends to be cool and damp in the PNW the San Juans are in mountain rain shadow. When you say whales, do you mean orcas?

The weather usually is quite good in June here. Right now I'm sitting outside writing this (and in a place where we do get almost constant winds/breezes from the Straits) and it's very pleasant temperature wise without a cloud in sight even.

So mostly June is like this day. You can get here by ferry from Anacortes or flying in a small plane (with like 10 passengers max) from Boeing field in Seattle. Or the Victoria Clipper passenger only boat from seattle.

You should make your hotel reservations soon for June if you want a good choice of options. Best time (really the only time as otherwise it would be a rarity) to see Orcas is from May to early Sept in this area.

"Is Friday Harbor like Whidbey island? " No, less traffic, more water access, National Parks, more of a feeling of "Island Time", very different things to do and to see, etc. And FH is the town on SJI. If it tells you, or other readers, anything, we go to Whidbey Island probably 10 times/year, and will be leaving, yet again, for SJI, Lonesome Cove Resort, next week. Great places!

You could take the Victoria Clipper, walk on only, from Seattle to Friday Harbor and rent a car. You'll need a vehicle to see the island's many highlights.

If you take the Anacortes - Friday Harbor/SJI ferry, plan on a two hour drive from Seattle (it could be less). Depending on your selected ferry, be there at least one, preferably up to two, hours before boarding. If you choose the 6:25 AM ferry, one hour before boarding. Especially given that it's a weekend trip.

We catch an early ferry to FH, 6:25 AM. It's worth it if only to have more time on the island.

This website is informative; pick your route and time.
