Santa Fe to Pagosa Spring - Route information

Is US285/84 a 2 or 4 lanes road? Is there any steep winding mountain road from SF to PS? We are planning a trip around Mid March and if it is not snow, is it an easy drive? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The road from Santa Fe to Espanola is mostly 4 lane. Then from Espanola to Abiquiu is a mix, 4 and 2 lane. This route will be very open, no problem. From Abiquiu to Chama, mostly hills and valleys, nothing that difficult 2 lane mostly. From Chama to Pagosa, there are mostly 2 lane roads, somewhat winding, but nothing like a mountain pass. There may be areas that are icy in the winter, and if there is a storm, roads can be bad!

We drive this route often, usually 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic, weather and stops!

3 to 4 hours is a good estimate, using the route described above. Watch your speed in Colorado...the patrols there are much more mindful of speeders than those in NM. It is a pretty drive, especially through Abiquiu. March weather is variable...careful for large dumps of wet snow, especially in Pagosa and Wolf Creek.
