Hot Air Balloon rides - Santa Fe??

Is it mostly ABQ, or are there balloon ride locations in Santa Fe as well? Doesn't seem to be much here on this site on ballooning?

Looking for a coupon or some discount ...wow, that's not cheap is it?? :)

To the best of my knowledge, there is only one hot-air balloon company operating out of Santa Fe...but its flights are outside of the city. The number one reason there are not balloon flights over the compact capitol, is that there is just no place to land...especially important in emergencies, or if the winds suddenly increase, which is common here.

If you wish to take a ride, I would certainly recommend you do it here in Albuquerque. You can find information on local, commercial balloon pilots through the following two sites.

http://www.balloonfiesta.com

http://www.itsatrip.org

And yes...they are expensive! For most however, these might be a once in a lifetime experience, so worth the cost for the memories. Personally, I prefer to fly in a balloon carrying only 3-5 passengers, rather than some of the largest commercial balloons which may hold a dozen people or so. The big balloons are just more compromised as to finding a landing space to accomodate their size and weight. You can ask about passenger size when you inquire with the various companies. As for costs, in general, you get what you pay for in most cases. I would also ask how long the pilot has had a Commercial license, and how many hours of general flying experience.

I might add that it's possible to get balloon rides outside Albuquerque. I think Gallup and Taos are also mentioned. Even the Hyatt Tamaya will arrange balloon flights from their resort. But Albuquerque also has the advantage of a big wide valley to fly in and a wind phenomenon known as the box which allows flying in, generally, both north and south directions by changing altitude. Also there's a good concentration of balloonists here, which may help keep costs down. I think most flights in Albuquerque begin on the west side now, affording a nice view of the valley and the Sandias, A plus would be getting over the Rio Grande and the bosque.
