Things to Do?

Hi, we're going to be in the area from the 19th of August for one week. We're planning on canoeing the Shenandoah, visitng the Luray Caverns, driving the Blue Ridge parkway, and maybe doing a little horseback riding. Are there any "must do" activities or attractions that anyone would recommend we take in while we're in the area?

A 45 minute drive from Luray is the New Market Battlefield. Virginia Military Institute operates the Visitors Center at the Battlefield. They have a film that tells the story of the VMI Keydets role in the victory at New Market and their march to get there.

While driving the Skyline Drive, I would visit Big Meadows, take the trail to Dark Hollow Falls' and visit Black Rocks ( not to far from the US 250 Entrance)

You're about 1.25 hours from Staunton which has some great restaurant (Zynodoa) and a Shakespeare Theater with quality productions.

I have been in the Luray area many times and you can/will find plenty to do. Plan on goint to Skyline Drive (not the Blue Ridge Parkway as it is often mistaken for). From Luray you can drive east to get to it in less than 30 minutes. there, you can go north or south. I like the south direction, have hiked many trails. There is a visitor center at the entrance for more info.

Also, try the Luray Zoo, especially if you have kids. The Luray Caverns are great but usually busy, further north is Skyline Caverns which is smaller but still nice. In the area of Luray, there are business that provide tubing, canoeing, atv's, horses, etc. You may find that time of the month to be hot and humid, or you may get lucky. Enjoy your trip!

Appalachian Adventures is the place to call. They have many activities for the enjoyment of the outdoors and the managers will accomodate to your expectations. Their activities are the greatest, fun, and safe for everyone. ATVs, Jet skis, targeting, fishing and more. Just let them know what you'd want to do, and they will make great recommendations. They will also assist you in referring your business to other attractions in the area.

Great activities for couples, families, and small groups of friends.
