Grand Canyon tours - flagstaff/williams/sedona

We are a family of 3 adults. Flying into Phoenix on June 11th at 8.30am. From here we plan to explore the Grand Canyon. We have two nights and flying out of phoenix on June 13 in the afternoon.

Which place out of Flagstaff or Williams or Sedona should we consider as our base for the two nights?

Which would be the convenient mode of transport to get to the above three places?

Which is the best tour to grand canyon that we should take? (we have heard about the train tour being inreresting and scenic!!). ie we have two days to explore the area - June 11 th and june 12th (13th june we return to phoenix). Would like to know the best possible options.

And last of all, which hotel to stay in for the two nights - budget about USD 100 per night; with breakfast thown in, if possible

First of all, you can and should do this tour on your own. There is no need for a tour guide or group. Renta car at the airport in PHX.

The best place to stay is in the park. Check Grand Canyon lodges (xanterra) for reservations. If none are available then the next best place is Tusayan, located just outside the park entrance on AZ64. Williams, Flagstaff and Sedona are all an hour or more away and will cost you valuable time when you only have 2 days to work with.

The train ride from Williams is a train ride, but it doesn't show you the canyon. It's just another way to get there and takes more of your valuable time.

You say you have 2 days to explore the area, but in reality you have 1 and 1/2 at best, because if you land in PHX at 830AM, you won't even get to the GCNP before 3 in the afternoon.

I agree you don't need a tour unless you can't drive in the states. If you aren't driving you can use Open Road Tours from the Phx airport to Flagstaff/ Williams or the GC and back. While Williams is a nice little town I'd choose Flagstaff especially if you are doing Sedona and the GC. Sedona from Flagstaff is a 35 min drive depending on traffic.

The train in Williams isn't exactly scenic and you don't see any part of the GC from it. But it is interesting and kids seem to enjoy it upgrade to a dome car if you do this option. The Verde Valley Rail Road is the scenic one perhapse what you heard. Hotels depend on where you want to stay Flagstaff will be the cheaper option.

Are you going to have a car when you get here?

Thanks

We cannot rent a car as we are coming from India.

What would be the fastest and most cost affective way to get to the entrance of the grand canyon (assuming it is the south rim) ie phx to entrance of grand canyon...or this is not recommended and we stay at Flagstaff..

We have checked that from phx, we can take a bus to flagstaff (grey hound). Is this ok.

What is the best guided tour we can take from flagstaff. we have the full day.

As we will reach flagstaff in the afternoon. What all can we do/see on the first day..

Our approx. hotel budget is USD 150/night. We are three adults. If breakfast included, it will be great..

In that case I recommend you consider staying in Sedona. there are more options and plenty of tourist oriented public transportation in and around Sedona.

The Sedona Shuttle runs from the airport to several stops in Sedona. Pink Jeep tours runs a good day trip tour to the Grand Canyon. There are plenty of other fun things to do and fabulous scenery to see in Sedona too. More than you'll find in Flagstaff or Williams.

Check out www.openroadtours.com I've used them to get to the airport and back its a good company. I don't think they stop in Sedona but they pick up at Phoenix airport, Amtrack in Flagstaff, train depot in Williams and the GC s rim.

Thanks for your feedback.

We will stay in Sedona.

Can a hotel be recommended in Sedona. For 3 adults about USD 150 per night with breakfast.

Also, if there is a bus service from the Phoenix airport to Sedona. The website or company name will help us to book the to and fro journey on the net..

The Sedona Shuttle Service will transport you to Sedona for a fee. I suggest you look for a hotel in the Uptown area. That will have you closer to tour transports and free trolley rides. Ask the shuttle driver if he can drop you at your hotel. (they have several scheduled stops in Sedona, but will usually accomodate you for a tip)

Thanks, we will check out the booking for the bus journey.

We would definitely like to stay in the 'town' area.

Would any of the following two Hotels be recommended. One criteria also being that it is central to eating and shopping areas.

Best Western Arroyo Roble Htl

Los Abrigados Resort And Spa
