2 days in Flagstaff - Must do's?

My wife and I are staying in Flagstaff Aug 1-2 for a couple of days off between business trips and we've never been to the area. What are the must-do's while we're there? We're going to do the GC for a day, and maybe go to Sedona for some star gazing since it'll be a new moon. What else should we not miss? Budget is a little tight so no helicopter or jeep tours - need to keep it as cheap as possible since we'll be burning gas. Petrified forest? Meteor crater? Thanks in advance for the advice.

One day at the Grand Canyon Nat'l Park, and one day in Sedona. Those are the two must dos. Both in the daylight. If you only go to Sedona at night you'll miss it. It's all about being there in the daylight, and it closes up at night. Same with the GC.

If you want to do star gazing the best place in Flagstaff is Lowel observatory. Theres lots of unique shops downtown flagstaff. If its a weekend you can park in the bank parking lots. There is also a free public lot on cherry and leroux behind the compass bank. The downtown streets are alphabetical and Aspen (ease) and Birch (west)are one ways so is San francisco(north) and Beaver (south). You can check out Riordan mansion, wupatki indian ruins and sunset crater is only a 40 minute drive north of flagstaff on 89 twards page past the flagstaff mall.

Skip metero crater. Petrified forest only if you have time as that is a 2 + hr drive just to get there from Flagstaff and a 3 hr stay and 2 + hrs back. Would take most of the day. And you are only there for 2 days. I'd do as mentioned Sedona and GC S rim. If you had a 3rd day or more you could see some more sites but you are quite limited.

My go list has some recomended places and a good Discovery map of Flagstaff. Not all the places are there any more but you get a general idea of the area. Just watch out for the construction there is quite a bit right now. You can also check out www.azdailysun.com which is the local Flagstaff paper online.

I agree with RedRox and Dragonflylady. Those are your main concerns. If you have a little time left visit the excellent Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. One of our other posters had to drag her family in but they we excited after their visit and we also enjoyed last year. Also, visiting Grand Canyon NP make a loop via it's east entrance (from us89) to GC Village and return via its south entrance and take us180 back to Flagstaff. The museum is on your right hand side on 180 entering Flag....

When you do your day at the Grand Canyon do this: get up early, have breakfast in Flagstaff, then go to the Grand Canyon through the South (takes about 90 minutes), stop and see the IMAX movie before entering the park, do some sightseeing in Grand Canyon village via the free shuttles. Then when you get ready to head back to Flagstaff, take the long way back via the East Rim drive to the Navajo Indian Reservation. There are many beautiful viewpoints that you can drive to with your own vehicle, including the Desert View Watchtower and the Tusayan Ruins.

Stop on the reservation at the Cameron Trading Post. If you're hungry, have lunch (or an early dinner) at their restaurant and get a Navajo taco (they're something of a local legend). After lunch, head South and then tour Wupatki and Sunset Crater before you get back to Flagstaff. They are situated very close to one another and can easily be enjoyed in a relatively short time. Taking this route back to Flagstaff will extend your drive time by another 90 minutes or so, but the scenery (and the Navajo Taco) makes it time well spent. Of course, you can also do it the opposite way (Wupatki - Cameron - Grand Canyon - Flagstaff).

Agree with other posters, in light of the short time you have, skip Petrified Forest and Meteor Crater. If you had an extra day we'd sing a different tune, but if you had to choose between PF and Sedona for your other day, Sedona is a slam-dunk. Closer, prettier, more to do.
