Things to do in the evening?

Hi all,

My boyfriend and I are spending around a week in Northern Arizona in late September/early October. We've got lots of things planned, including the Grand Canyon, Verde Canyon railroad, some walking around Sedona, etc, but we're a little stuck for things to do in the evenings. Do the likes of Flagstaff/Williams/Sedona/Prescott have any fun things to do - I'm thinking a drive-in movie theatre, bowling alley, live music venue, perhaps even a ghost tour or something. While we're happy spending a few hours in a bar, we don't really want to be doing that every night!

Any suggestions most appreciated.

One night if you feel like gazing at the stars in an educational way, you could visit Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff.

I haven't seen a drive in movie in years, but all the cities you mentioned have regular movie theaters.

If you want a "ghost tour" check out what Jerome has to offer.

Flagstaff has lots of bars and nightclubs, mostly geared to a college aged crowd or country/western theme. NAU has lots of cultural events as well. And as mentioned the Lowell Observatory has a night sky presentation that is very popular.

In Sedona, look for live entertainment at many of the bars, mostly on weekends. Evening Sky Tours is an outdoor night sky experience and rated very high in Sedona. The town of Jerome does ghost tours at night, and increases the schedule as October and Halloween get closer.

You will be surprised though at how the fresh air and altitude will take it's toll on your body. Expect to be tiring earlier than you normally do. Going to bed shortly after sunset and rising at sunrise in the morning is a regular routine in this part of the world.

This site http://www.driveinmovie.com

has listings to drive ins across the country. None in Flagstaff. I was happy to see that Arizona is actually building some new ones. Huge shock. ... the prices. They are about half what we pay in California to go to a mall theater.

Great, thanks guys. We'll check out the observatory programme.

I hadn't even thought about the altitude, etc, thanks for the tip!

There is a bowling alley in Flagstaff, but I wouldn't plan my itinerary around it. Last time I was there (admittedly a few years ago, with no need to return), it was pretty dirty and smoke-filled. Flagstaff has since instituted a no-smoking policy in bars and the like. To smoke you must go outside, so maybe that has had a positive effect on the place. On the other hand, if you enjoy bowling, you might like the bowling alley at Cliff Castle Casino in the Verde Valley: http://www.cliffcastlecasino.net/ccc_srb.asp

The following notes all apply to Flagstaff-

There is a road-house style bar on Rt. 66 that is kind of fun for a short visit. It is called The Museum Club and is worth a look for the architecture: http://www.museumclub.com/site/

An old historic theater in downtown Flagstaff, the Orpheum, usually has something going on: http://www.orpheumpresents.com/

Also, there are events at NAU and the community theater, Theatrikos http://www.theatrikos.com/

If you want to check back later, the most comprehensive community events calendar can be found here: http://calendar.azdailysun.com/

This would be more updated as your trip draws near.

Pick up a copy of "Flagstaff Live" when you arrive. It will list all the live music and events for the week.

Flagstaff is a college town. There will be plenty to do.
