Phoenix to Flagstaff to GC

How bad is the traffic in late March (week before Easter)? Havebusiness in Phx then slring break with kids. Hope to spend 1 full day at canyon with sunset. Some TA posts say "must stay at the rim" but family only wants to stay in max 2 places during the week. Agree the Flagstaff is obvious choice for 3-4 nights?

Staying for sunset means driving in the dark, very dark unless the moon is out, back to Flagstaff. Just be sure to drive slowly and carefully as there will be animals crossing the road. One day at GCNP is minimal experience but only if it is all day, otherwise it's absolutely not enough time.

Flagstaff is about 90 minutes from GCNP. You can do a loop - entering through south or east gate of the park and exiting out the other as your most efficient use of time there.

I would not recommend driving back at night. I would rather skip sunset than worry about encountering large mammals on the roadway after dark.

Depending on your level of interest in hiking and how early a start you can get on that day, one day may or may not be enough time to feel you've seen enough.

Keep in mind, it will be cool in Flagstaff in March. Possibly even snow. If kids want to swim, etc. choose a hotel with indoor pool and research indoor activities.

I would make Sedona your base as I think the kids would find much more to do there. You can make a day trip in 2 hours to the Grand Canyon for the day and be back before dark. Of course ghost eliminate sunset or sunrise, but at least you would see it with out having to stay in 3 different places.

A. Pink jeep tour in Definable would be a highlight for all of you.

Agreeing with Thelrose that Sedona makes a good base. Also agreeing that driving in the dark is a bad idea, especially in March when winter conditions are still possible at GCNP or Flagstaff and anywhere above the Mogollon Rim.

If sunset at the canyon is a must, then you need to over rule the family and stay over night there.

If you really only want to spend one day at the GC, do you have any idea what you would like to do the other days. Near Flagstaff you also have Walnut Canyon or Sunset Crater / Wupatki, Bearizona is not too far away and neither is Meteor Crater - this would make Flagstaff a good base indeed, and if you establish a base from which to geet to the GC and back it wouldn't make sense to move further away than Flagstaff.

Basically though I'd try to convince the family to stay a night at the GC at an in-park lodge; it really is a special experience.

El Tovar, Kachina, Thunderbird and Bright Angel lodges are right at the rim. Maswik and Yavapai lodges on a short distance.
