Painted Desert

We will be staying in Flagstaff instead of the Grand Canyon for a couple of days next week before heading to Sedona. I have read that the Painted Desert Visitor Center is inside the Petrified National Forest. Are their other areas of the Painted Desert that would be accessible for us to drive through?

The Painted Desert is a huge area which can be seen from I-40 from Holbrook west to Flagstaff, and then north along east of Hwy 89 N of Flagstaff most of the way to Page. There are roads through the area as well. Use only paved roads.

Great views on Painted desert from the Sunset Crater Volcano/Wupatki loop and closer than PFNP. And prob entrance to PF is not possible because of the NP closures. Same goes for GC but the drive along Wupatki won't be affected. Both NMs probably also will be closed though.

Just driving north from Flagstaff on 89/89A eventually takes you through gorgeous sections of Painted Desert. You could make it an excursion/day trip to Page, or Navajo Bridge/Cliff Dwellers where you also see the Vermilion Cliffs.

We drove 89 north today from Flagstaff. Before you even get to Cameron it is spectacular. Beyond there it only gets better. Drive all the way up to Marble Canyon and Navajo Bridge. Take a side trip on 160 to Tuba City. Painted Desert scenery is awesome in this region.
