Day trip to GC from Flagstaff

We're not really roughing it kind of people but look to spend 2 nights in Flagstaff in mid October and spend one day going along the GC drive -west to east and returning to Flagstaff. We thought we'd pack a lunch and meander along the south rim to the exit. It's been 30 years plus since I've been there. We'll also go to the Lowell observatory one night.

Sound like a plan? Anything to avoid or include from the park entrance going east - Google Earth looks like a simple drive to putter along in a rented convertible.

Good plan. Do you have any specific questions?

You will need to park the convertible and walk to the rim. GCNP is not a drive-by attraction, and you cannot see much from a car except one overlook on the east rive.

If you have a full day, take the shuttle west toward Hermits Rest. Check the map on the web site for stops where the shuttle picks up going east. Later drive the east drive to Desert View stoppng at overlooks as you wish.

Sounds like a good plan. The roads are good and straightforward. Make sure to stop at Desert View. You may think you've seen as much as you care to by the time you get that far east, but there is a nice tower there you can walk up and take in the view from a different perspective.

Tasty sandwiches are available for take-out at Wildflower Bread Co. on Butler Rd. in Flagstaff.

Its not recommended to drive in the dark but if you do I;d do it east -west so enter GC by its east entrance. So after sunset take 64 (be careful for wildlife on the road) to Williams and I40 back to Flagstaff.

Great, many thanks- no specific questions and hopefully October is low season. checked the sunset timing and would probably stop along the way back to star gaze a bit. Just get back to Flagstaff for a late dinner.

October is NOT low season. It might be the most popular time to be in northern AZ as the autumn colors change and temperatures cool and humidity decreases from the summer monsoon. Weekends will be sold out in Sedona, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon National Park. Book your accommodations soon or expect choices to be limited.

Another way to improve the efficiency of your day trip would be to enter the park at the east gate and travel west. In this way you'll be moving against the heavier traffic flow and there will be no left turns into the canyon view points.

everyone has their favorite places to gaze into the canyon, but one of our favorites is at Maricopa Point - we just really like the views from there.
