Doable?

Flying into Buffalo in early August; want to: see the falls one day; enjoy downtown, maybe a museum and casino another day; go to wine country one day.

I have been warned that if there is a NASCAR race, there might be a lot of traffic, so is my plan doable? When is the race?

Will take any general or specific advice. Our first time traveling to the region (since the 60's, anyway!)

How long is your stay would be the question as to whether this is doable.

Here is a link to the Watkins Glen Race track so you can see if any races are scheduled at the time of your stay.

There are 5 lakes in the finger lakes wine country so I am sure you will be able to avoid traffic if that is the day you picked. However to do wine country I would suggest at least a 2 day visit to the finger lakes. With so many wineries and the region is absolutely beautiful you could be disappoint in one day.

Downtown Buffalo you can enjoy the Albright Knox Art Gallery and/or for shopping the Elmwood Village - lots of small specialty shops.

Lady Dee always recommends a trip to City Hall to see the city from the top of the building but it is only open during the week.

There are lots of walking tours and an open air bus tour of the city of Buffalo.

Hope this give you a start

Hi CultureHound, If you have a passport (or enhanced drivers license) you might consider visiting wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL), Ontario which is located north of Niagara Falls. No worries about race car traffic there. Here's an example of a wineries tour: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g154999-d1…

NOTL also has the Shaw Festival, they perform early modern plays at very high quality (including works by G.B. Shaw.) www.shawfest.com/…

P.S. Thanks for the shout-out, jmhallmark!

Thanks for your replies. Now that we have a hotel picked out for half of our trip, we have more questions.

1. We're flying out ultra-early when we leave, so we want to stay on the airport property and need a place with a 24-hour (or VERY reliable) shuttle. I don't want to stress out with a place that says they have a shuttle and then it broke down, driver didn't show up, whatever. Any hotel rec's?

2. Are there tour companies that will pick you up at your hotel and take you out for a day? I'm not interested in "private limo" prices; thinking more "shuttle" prices.

3. If we don't do (2, above) - we'll be renting a car. What would be a good wine itinerary for wineries that would give us the best experience if we prioritize "quality" of wines first. We are traveling mid-week so these places must be open on weekdays.

Thanks!
