July 4 - Western New York

We are travelling by car to Massachusetts for a week, going through Western New York. (I-90) We are from Canada. Our hotel is booked for Sat., July 5th. We plan to stay overnight on the way (prefer not to drive for long periods, nor in the evening). We were thinking of leaving the 3rd of July but we wondered what the traffic patterns would be like considering the July 4th holiday. Or would we be better to wait until the 4th (midday) ? Would traffic calm down a bit by then ? Or is it just as busy? Any suggestions?

My experience in driving on any holiday week or weekend is that you will not avoid the daytime traffic, no matter what you do. Traffic will be somewhat lighter in the early morning and in the evening.

Try www.peacebridge.com which has historical statistics as to traffic on an hourly basis. You can check the dates and it will give you traffic by the hour from last year or the year before on whatever days you want. That should answer your question.
