most romantic restaurant in Newport

Hi, we are staying in Providence at the Westin for the weekend of 11/9, but are looking for somewhere special to dine in Newport for the night of the 10th - we are celebrating our wedding anniversary.

Here is what I would like - does not have to be a "jacket required" kind of place - actually would prefer something less pretentious and more intimate with good food. Something small would be great. Any kind of cuisine is fine, we like all sorts of things.

Any ideas? I've never been to Newport before, so we are very much looking forward to this getaway.

Thanks -

Suzanne

Clarke Cooke House

Nice and Romantic (but would like you to wear jackets)

(they might have relaxed the jacket requirement...the website says business casual)

(nicest setting in town)

Just from the website/menu, I like the look of Tucker's Bistro. Thanks for the suggestions, it always helps to have some of these things done ahead of time instead of wandering the streets aimlessly looking for a place to eat!

Peurini's is very nice. As is the new Fluke Wine Bar & Kitchen.

There's a great Newport dining guide at www.tablehound.com that you can check out. It has lots of information on every restaurant in Newport. Gonewport.com is also a good resource, though less focused on dining.

I wouldn't consider Fastnet romantic in any way, altho I love the atmosphere. It's a pub...nothing romantic. I would second the White Horse...the history alone is worth the visit.

LOL, Fastnet romantic...I saw that she had inquired about authentic Irish pubs in a post on the Providence forum....so I just wanted to point out 2 more authentic feeling pubs in Newport if they were looking for a place to grab a drink AFTER, their Romantic Dinner....I hope they had a good time in Newport and Providence.

White Horse! They do prefer a jacket and they are expensive, but we love it.

I went to the White Horse in September of 06 and many patrons were dressed in 'tourist casual'...not shorts but slacks and blouses for the ladies and slacks and shirt sleeves for the men. We didn't feel it was stuffy at all.
