PLanning Tips, Please

My wife and I are going to Newport in May. As with all new destinations, we'd love opinions about what to see while in the area. Which mansions and how many do you really have to see? What other attractions should we look into?

Thanks.

The Breakers is the biggest and best mansion. How many to see is a matter of taste. Some people think if you've seen one, you've seen them all. History fans might want to see them all.

Other things to do would be to drive Ocean Drive, walk at least some of Cliff Walk, take a harbor cruise, walk Thames Street and the warves, and head up one of the side streets to see the Colonial homes up close. Nearby Jamestown and Little Compton are beautiful less-crowded places to take a drive. There is a vineyard in Little Compton, Sakkonet Vineyard, that is a great place to stop and have a bite to eat or do a wine tasting. On Jamestown drive to Beavertail and walk out on the cliffs at Fort Wetherill State Park.

Definitly don't limit yourself to the mansions, there is tons more to see and do.

Another suggestion would be to cross over the bridge to Narragansett. A small town with a nice beach. You could also try the scenice drive between Narragansett -> Scarborough Beach -> Point Judith.

Last time in Newport my wife and I did horseback riding on the beach, sailing on a 35 ft boat in the Harbour, visited the Brakers and Elma, walked the Cliffwalk and the 10 mile ocean drive. It was a great weekend and we are coming back on Columbus weekend. It really is a great place with a lot to do. there are also many good restaurant and shops and walking along Thames is also great. Good luck
