Day Trip to Newport on a Budget

We will be in Cape Cod May 19-23, 2011. We want to take a day trip to Newport with child (7 yrs). Any suggestions on where to eat and what to see on a one day time limit and a BUDGET?

Drive down Bellevue Ave to view the mansions, and then around Ocean Drive. Go to Easton's Beach and get 2for1 lobster rolls, where they have all sorts of games for kids (not free). Walk on Cliff Walk, or around the harbor, or around Fort Adams State Park. Eat at Yesterdays at Washington Square.

What is your budget....Hillside gave some great suggestions.

Ryan Family Amusements on Thames will offer some distractions for the 7 year old.

If you are there on the 22nd, the Annual Soap Box Derby takes place on Memorial Blvd throughout the Morning and Afternoon (Right near Memorial Blvd. entrance to the Cliff Walk) There is also a Carnival in the Beach Parking Lot that weekend. (Entry is Free)

In addition to the above suggestions, the Jamestown/Newport Ferry is an economical way to get out on the water and have a few adventures.

It takes you to Fort Adams. There is a hard hat flashlight tour of the fort that the kids I have taken have enjoyed. It also stops at the Rose Island Lighthouse, a real working lighthouse, which can be toured. Also on the island are torpedo storage facilities from WWII which you can wander through at will.

The best place to get authentic RI seafood is Flo's Clam Shack just over the line in Middletown. VERY budget-friendly.

Have a nice visit! Touring mansions is pretty boring for a 7 year old. I'd opt for the drive by and something more hands on after that.
