You do not have to book in advance for any of the harbor tours, especially if you're here during the week. Weekends it gets more crowded. Have you considered maybe taking a sailing lesson? We took a series of 3 lessons from Sail Newport

We took the 3 day evening class and loved it! We plan to go back for more someday. 3 Students and one instructor per boat.

As for fishing excursions, my advice is to take some motion sickness medication before you depart.

You can do a 2 hour cruise on the Aquidneck or charter 6 passenger sailboat for a private sail. The booth is right on Bowens Wharf and they leave every few hours.
