NYC - Newport - NYC. By car or train?

We are considering spending 4 days in Newport after our visit to NYC. We are flying in and out of JFK New York airport. We would prefer not to drive around New York. There are 4 adults in our group. My question is: can someone suggest somewhere outside Manhattan where we can get to by a short train ride, pick up a rental car and then drive to Newport? And on the way back to JFK, drop off the car at the same place and then take direct public transport to JFK? This assuming we might need a car while staying in Newport. Thanks

Since you are already going to be in the city, I would suggest taking Amtrak to Kingston and then a cab to Newport from there.

Amtrak ride is pleasant and scenic in some areas and the ride from PennStation to Kingston is about 3hrs 10 minutes

Once in Newport, there are several car rental places.

You could also take the NYC commuter metro MTA (I think) to a city like South Norwalk, CT for example, and perhaps there is a rental agency there. The MTA may provide a better connection to JFK on the return, although Amtrak from Penn would probably be more pleasant. Either way, for four days in Npt though, it should be worth it.

Check out Stamford, CT or New Haven, CT. I believe there is a Hertz rental right across from Stamford station and a AVIS inside the New Haven station.

You could take the New Haven train from Grand Central station New York to either of these places. Stamford is probably 1hr outside the city & New Haven is like 2 hrs.

Yes, take the Metro North train out of Grand Central Station. Enterprise, for one, has rentals at numerous stations. Here's a link:

Yes, either Stamford or New Haven would work to rent a car from the Metro North Train station. In any event, once in Newport, you may find that you may not need your car very much; it's very walkable and there are bike and moped rentals as well.
