HELP!!!!! Please..Planning 2 nights in May 30th anniversary

Taking my wife to Newport May 13-15 to celebrate our 30th anniversary. She has no idea we are going but has always wanted to go and visit the mansions, We will likely arrive late Monday am and leave mid afternoon Wednseday. Unfortunately some of the better restaurants in town as well as the schrooner tour are closed eeither monday or Tuesday. We are staying at the Chanler, likely doing dinner at Bouchard on Monday, trying to decide on a Tuesday night dinner. Will go to 3-5 mansions (which my wife enjoys), the tennis hall of fame (which I enjoy) as well as finding time for the ocean drive and cliff walk. Although i expect night life is suboptimal Monday and Tuesday nights, would love to find a reasonable post dinner music or dancing spot. All recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Well you certainly have hit the right spots....staying at the Chanler will make her feel like she's staying in a manison. And Bouchard's is always an award winner for romantic/special restaurants.

For LIVE music, Monday the FastNet at 1 Broadway on the corner of Broadway and Washington Square has a good band. It's an authentic Irish Pub that is popular with the locals. The FastNet also has a Blues Band on Tuesdays.

Not much in the way of LIVE music this time of year on Monday/Tuesdays but places will still be open playing recorded music. Grab a copy of the Newport This Week and the Mercury (the two weekly free papers in town) that will give you a better idea of entertainment options.

Thank you! Love Jazz so FastNet should work. Any thoughts on the best mansions to hit or Tuesday night dinner?

Not sure if you are looking for anything specific for your Tuesday dinner but for another special meal I'd recommend Tallulah on Thames. It small with an open kitchen and much more casual than Bouchard. The food is exceptional. Local, artisanal products. creative preparations and artfull presentations. I'm not a very formal guy so this is my favorite place for a special dinner.

That was my pick also but apparently they are closed on Tuesday that time of year.

The White Horse Tavern is a good choice for someone who is a fan of history. It's been in operation since the 17th century. If the night is chilly there will be a nice fire to eat in front of. The food is good and the price can be moderate depending on how many courses, etc, you choose.

You have really hit a home run with the Chanler. The Spiced Pear, their restaurant, is very beautiful. I have yet to eat there, however! The day we planned to have lunch there it was closed for a private party. Dinner there is expensive, but not as expensive as some of Newport. The Castle Hill Inn would be at least $75pp. At lunch, however, you could get away with about $20pp, and the view is the same. Perhaps better, since daylight is guaranteed. Down the hill from the Chanler is Flo's Clam Shack. It's the best clam shack in RI, and there is little over $15 on the entire menu.

Thanks for the response.. Looking through menus and reviews I am leaning towards the Canfield house but Moorings or Mama Luisa might be options if my wife wants seafood (nonshellfish as she is allergic) or italian.

More questions. How late do the bars stay open during the week? How much time should I plan for the Tennis Hall of Fame, the Ocean Drive, the cliff walk, the Touro synagogue.?

Bars don't stay open that late in RI. I think around midnight on a week night. You could spend 1-3 hrs at the Hall of Fame depending on what kind of a tennis fan you are. It's really quite special to have lunch overlooking the courts outside, at La Forge Casino. A hour +- for Ocean Drive, Cliff Walk has limited access now due to Sandy, so really depends on how much you want to walk, at least an hour to check it out and stroll around, or quite a bit more if you want to try and make your way to the end. Touro- a half hour or so to view the synagogue, a little more if you want to check out the new Loeb Visitor Center.

Bars close at 1AM every day, though on a Monday or Tuesday in May a lot of places will be pretty quiet late.

The White Horse Tavern, the Mooring, Mama Luisa are all good choices depending on what you're after. I haven't been to the Canfield House since high school but I always think of it as kind of old school, traditional American. It was my grandmother's favorite place. Another favorite of mine is Perro Salado.

Thank you all for your help. It sounds like I will be ok with any of the chosen restaurants. . Tentatively arrive noon Monday , Lunch at the Castle Hill inn. Depending on the forecast will do the 10 mile drive or the cliff walk followed by 1 or 2 mansions. Dinner at Bouchard. Breakfast at the Chanler. Touro synagogue then Mansion tour followed by Tennis hall of fame with lunch at LaForge casino. 10 mile drive or cliff walk to follow with possibly another mansion. Dinner at WHT, Mooring Mamma Luisa's, Perro Salado or Canfield house followed by jazz at Fastnet. Wednesday breakfast ? at hotel or elsewhere, followed by the Breakers and likely head back to NJ. It seems to me this should be doable time wise but is there anything I left out?
