RIPTA advice

Hi,

We are visiting Newport at the end of May, catching the Amtrak from NYC into Kingston. We are scheduled to arrive at 11.33am and was looking at saving some $$ and catch the RIPTA into Newport Towne centre. Looking at the schedule looks like we have a short wait and catch the 64 bus @ 12.05 , could anybody confirm where the bus stop is we need to get to after exiting the train. Also are the buses a reliable way to get to Newport? Or would people suggest booking a private hire car? And what kind of cost could that be and also how quicker would it be?

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Si

The Kingston stop is a very small station...the RIPTA buses stop right outside. It's definitely cheaper than a taxi or car service. If you used a private car it would take about 30 minutes to get to Newport from the station.

Hi, thanks for getting back. I am presuming the bus service is extremely reliable, and favoured by people local to the area?

Also out of interest how much would a private hire/taxi cost?

Cheers

The busses are just outside of the tiny train station.....nearly right at the front door. Taxi would be expensive but there are also always cabs in front when a train is arriving.

You could also consider a car service but that would be $$$$ I would guess $60 or more

I just want to make sure you're arriving on a weekday, because on Saturdays the bus schedule is different and it does not run at all on Sundays.

Here is a link to the taxi company that would pick you up at the station.

Buses are safe and reliable here. They are just not as common as in the big cities and don't run as often or go everywhere you might want to go. In your case I think it's an easy way to get to Newport, and you'll get to stop by our biggest university and picturesque Jamestown along the way!
