newport r.i. to albany n.y.

We have been touring New England,Boston, Cape Cod and are now heading to Ogunquit Maine

After Maine we're heading to Newport R.I. to tour the mansions

We depart Albany N.Y. for our trip home and have a few extra days after Newport RI.

We would appreciate any suggestions on where to stop for a two days in route to Albany

We enjoy cultural , history and scenic sights. We don't know the

area and greatly appreciate any help from the TA people

Thank you in advance for any help you can give us.

Check out Mystic, CT. Fabulous small historic New England seaport. From there I'd suggest Stockbridge, MA in the Berkshires, if you haven't already. If you have, then Essex, CT is a wonderful historic New England small town. There is a steam train you can ride to enjoy the scenery along the Connecticut River, and then take a ferry ride back to Essex after.

While in Newport do NOT miss Ocean Drive. It's the most scenic coastal drive in New England. I may be biased, but where else do you have mansions lining the road? Also do not miss the wharves.. Bowen's and Bannister's Wharves on the harbor off Thames St. Take a boat of some type... there is a cheap harbor shuttle, the Jamestown/Newport Ferry or a charter cruise from the wharves.

The weather is spectacular right now. Tuesday is going to be cool, but not so much to limit your choices. Just have a sweater or sweatshirt handy.

All good suggestions from Laury. I would say that since you have stayed on the coast so far it would be nice to see some of the New England mountains regions. The Berkshires are beautiful but you could head up to Vermont for some more "mountainy" mountains. Lots of pretty villages, scenic drives and hikes and very different from the coast.

Berkshires are lovely! Good choice as lots to see and do there. Here are a few suggestions:

(Norman Rockwell Museum)

Red Lion Inn is well known hotel in Stockbridge.

(currently has a butterfly exhibit)

(have visited another Shaker Village in New Hampshire and it is very interesting)

(Mohawk Trail is beautiful to see and 47 miles to Albany NY)

Think this gives you some good ideas for a couple of days! Enjoy.

My DH and I visited Rosecliff Mansion in Newport on Saturday, this was our 4th mansion visit. You will love them! Suggest you start with The Breakers as this is the most spectacular one. Rosecliff is next to Breakers so you could do those 2. Just checked tixs and you can purchase The Breakers plus 1 other mansion for $24.50. Parking free and you can buy tickets on property grounds. There are currently renovations going on outside grounds but you can tour inside. I would advise doing no more than 2 mansions in a day.
