Where to stay in Oahu? Four couples traveling together...

We're undecided as to what type of accomodations to look for.

A condo? A villa? A vacation home? Separate hotel rooms?

We'll be staying in Oahu for five nights before boarding the Pride of America cruise. Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? Our stay begins on August 9, 2010.

Depending on your budget, I think Turtle Bay or The Royal Hawaiian are great choices for couples.

We're traveling with another couple and staying in a two bedroom, two bath suite at Embassy Suites. You might consider two of these. That would give you a great breakfast, evening reception, and a sitting room for you to visit together in your suite.

The only thing that could be dicey about a rental property is that they usually rent by the week. But eating two nights of rent might still be cheaper than paying for separate hotel rooms, and there are some rather amazing houses for rent. On the other hand, having everyone book their own room in Waikiki would be easier to organize and give everyone more freedom.

Let's start with this: do you want to stay in Honolulu/Wailiki or do you want to stay on another part of the island?

Do you want to prepare your meals as a group? Is there a reason you all need to be in the same place?

I think the Embassy Suites is a great idea. Excellent accomodations in a wonderful location in Waikiki. Free made to order breakfast every morning and "free happy hour" as well. You can hang together or be as independent as you want ... with easy access to the public transportation system, taxis and such.

To deal with a condo or house for that short period before a cruise sounds like a real hassle to me.

We plan on spending approximately $200 a night per couple. We don't have an itinerary just yet and are really open to location. We've looked at VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner) at Turtle Bay and were possibly considering one of them.

Thanks Sugarnut. We were considering Turtle Bay - one of their VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) properties (condo). Have you ever stayed there? How far is it from Honolulu?

Thanks for the post, BLBL.

We'd love to be by the water but are fairly open to any location on the island.

We wouldn't mind having breakfast and possibly a few dinners in, rather than going out for all meals.

The one main sticking point is number of bathrooms. We really would love to have as many as possible - at least three.

Embassy Suites is about 1/2 block from the beach in the heart of Waikiki. They have various types of units, but you can count on a dining room table, a frig and a microwave and sink. Remember - if you are going to cook -- you'll need to do the whole grocery store thing. Condo, house ... probably a cleaning deposit.

Turtle Bay is not close to Honolulu. Probably an hour's drive, depending on traffic. A tad isolated if you want to see the sites in Honolulu. It is relatively close to the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie.

Oahu is beautiful, so it you do stay in Waikiki, pick up a car for at least a day and tour around the island.

Do you have a good map of Oahu? Pick one up at AAA or Borders or Barnes and Noble. You'll be glad you did. Also - think about car rentals. That is something that you need to do early in your planning process.
