Pearl Harbor Tour

A group of 8 of us are visiting Wakiki Beach in a couple of weeks and we think Pearl Harbor is a must see. We are considering renting a vehicle and driving to Pearl Harbor on our own as opposed to going through one of the tour agencies. Would you discourage that idea? Is there parking available? Do we need to get advance tickets? Are there any other things we need to take into consideration when planning our trip to Pearl Harbot? Can you recommend the best site to get tickets?

The vast majority of visitors drive themselves to Pearl Harbor and tour on their own as opposed to organized tours. Yes there is parking.

It's best to order your tickets on line, www.recreation.gov for the USS Arizona Memorial. There is a 1.50 processing fee per ticket. You need to be there an hour before your tour time, otherwise they will give your tickets to walk-ups.

You can't take any bags inside, there are lockers but most people just put what they need (wallet, glasses etc.) in their pockets. You can take cameras, just not the cases.

Your tickets are free. There is a $1.50 charge per ticket for reserving your time. www.nps.gov/valr/planyourvisit/index.htm is the website. You just need to arrive 1 hour in advance of your tour time to pick up the tickets, otherwise they will be given to walk-ups.

The above tickets are for the USS Arizona only. If you want to also visit the USS Missouri, Bowfin, and the Pacific Aviation Museum, you can purchase tickets for those attractions after visiting the USS Arizona.

For transportation, you can rent a car, and park at PH for no charge. It is entirely safe to park there. However, you can also take TheBus for $2.50 one way with a 3 hour transfer included, or $1.00 with a Medicare card. The website for more info www.TheBus.org

You cannot take any sort of purse, bag, large camera case into PH main area. Everything you have can be checked for $3.00 per bag. It's just easier not to take anything that won't fit in pockets. You can take a small camera.

Visiting PH is the highlight of many visitor's trips to Hawaii. We go almost every time we go to Hawaii (11 previous trips) and will be going again when we are there in Dec/Jan.

ENJOY!
