good moderate priced Japanese dinner

My daughter wants to treat us to an "authentic" Japanese dinner. Any suggestions? Will have a car.

Until some real experts chim in here, I'll note that the link to the top right of this screen titled "Amberloo and Food" is an excellent resource for scoping out some authentic and affordable eateries.

Amberloo and food has a very good list. My favorite on the list is Ichiriki. It's a nabe restaurant where you cook your own food in a simmering broth. The staff will show you how to do it if you are unsure.

There are numerous choices and I have many favorites.

Hinone mizunone on king near keeamoku is one that always makes my Japanese friends smile with delight. It is busy even at lunch and I always make reservations. The building is simple and feels a little like a refurbished Taco Bell with fantastic Japanese flavors.

The menu is better at dinner. The service has been repetitively above average and the ratio of tourists to locals is pleasantly immediately noticeable.

The staff, after only a few visits, remembers you by name as well as your likes and dislikes.

There are a lot of very good, very Japanese restaurants in Honolulu and they may have items you have never seen or heard of before. Okonomiyaki Chibo would be one such place. Okonomiyaki is a Japanese "pancake" made with flour, eggs, vegetables and basically any other ingredients you want, fish meat, etc.

Ichiriki, Bistro A Un and Jinroku are all great and izakayas, or Japanese tapas bars, for lack of a better description.

Imanas Tei, Sushi Izakaya Gaku and Yohei Sushi Restaurant are sushi restaurants that have a lot more than sushi.

Next are the yakiniku, or "cook your own" places. A lot of the yakiniku spots in Honolulu are technically Korean restaurants, even though yakiniku is a Japanese word and concept, but one great Japanese one is Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ.

Then there is Curry House Coco Ichibanya, a great Japanese curry house. You get to build your own meal, love them!

And the last I'll throw out there is Asuka Nabe + Shabu Shabu. Nabe and shabu shabu are also cook your own only you cook the meal in a broth that is at your table and you choose the broth flavor.

Hi there,

I don't mind most of these A'la' Carte ideas

as long as the "Food" doesn't walk off the plate

as in a film that had a 2 piece lobster going

walkabout..Keep that in mind 075 when you order next time.

Bon Appertite and Merry Xmas to all..NWF..
