Should I rent a car or should I go with Waikiki Trolley

We are planning to visit Honolulu in mid-late April, mostly it will be sight-seeing activities and beaches, should I rent a car or should I go with Waikiki Trolley service? Which one will give us the convenience we need and worth the dollar?

THANKS!

It's really a matter of Cost v Convenience. Personally I found having a car much better as we didnt have to rely on timetables and could just go where we wanted when we wanted. Of course this comes at a higher cost though! Remember to also factor in your hotel parking cost. We are staying at Hotel Renew and they charge $25 a night which seems to be the norm around Waikiki.

Rent a car and see the WHOLE island.

The Bus is the local transport and goes everywhere, including Pearl Harbor.

Check with your hotel about parking fees, they can be quite high.

You could use the trolley or The Bus and get a hire car for the last few days to see the rest of the island.

The trolley and a car are not comparable.

The trolley is a cutesy, touristy, over-hyped thing ... no air conditioning and all the car exhaust you can inhale! Often over-packing with international tour groups. Generally more expensive than the bus.

The public bus has a much more frequent schedule, is much more flexible. $2.50 per ride (exact change) - and you can purchase multi-trip cards. http://thebus.org/

But neither are a substitute for a car. If you want to see the north, east and south shores - you really need a car. These are gorgeous areas ... and far too many people sequester themselves in Honolulu only. There is SO much to see and do all around the Island. So rent a car - at least for part of your time. Make sure to reserve it in advance.

Rent a car the entire time & get out & see the island.

If you want to save some $$, you can park at Aston Waikiki Banyan for $12/night or $72/week.

Waikiki Banyan is #70 on this map. Hotel Renew is #82. Banyan is almost right behind Hotel Renew.

Either rent a car or use "The Bus" (public transportation system). The Trolley might be fun for a ride or two but isn't really practical as a means of general transportation.

Every day someone asks about alternative parking because their hotel charges $25-$35/day.

So almost daily we answer about parking at Waikiki Banyan.

There is also a Top Question about parking fees for Waikiki and resort fees for all islands.

Are we going to get a trip report?

Yes I do seem to recall someone (maybe you!) saying something about this cheaper parking before but completely forgot when we checked in. Sigh. My own fault!

Trip report will come! Last day in Hawaii today then off home so I will do one soon! :-)

Trolley is useless for sightseeing around the island. Car is best, and if not renting a car, then TheBus.
