Vans Triple Crown surfing competition in 2013

When are the dates of the big surfing events on Oahu this winter? We will be on Oahu this coming November and hope to catch a couple days of the action. Is it necessary to stay on the North Shore during the events or is it possible to go for the day from Waikiki?

Did you Google it?

It's OK to go for the day from Waikiki. Not a big deal. Just get a very early start - so it is easier to park. And weekdays are better than weekends.

Its a window, they start in around mid novemeber but no specific date, the wait for good surf.

Watching big surf on thr north shore is amazing and november your chances are good. Not a bad idea to subscribe to surfline for month before your vacation, they will give you the surf forecast maybe as much as 10 days in advance and they are very accurate. Really pays off to go the best days.

Have a look at: http://www.vanstriplecrownofsurfing.com/

The dates don't really change, year on year. As someone else has said, the events take place during the 'window' and run for the best four days. The best event is the Pipe Masters as the viewing is a lot better than the Haleiwa and Sunset events.

That website will carry live streaming of the events - so you can watch from home! There will also be surf predictions of when the swell will be biggest.

I would stay out there on the North Shore - have a look for houses on vrbo.com

On big wave days when the competition is on, the 'call' is made at around 7.30 in the morning and competition starts at 8.00 am. So if you are coming up from Waikiki you won't be on the North Shore until 11 am or later. Traffic queues are long - could take an hour to get from Haleiwa to Waimea - and parking is difficult f you arrive late.

Competition for the day is usually finished by around 4.00 pm.

I really would stay on the North Shore as base. Getting in to Waikiki in the morning takes around an hour ...

If you don't mind hostels, there is an excellent one on the north shore that is about 100 yards from rocky point and within walking distance to pipeline and sunset beach. Look up ho'o nanea hale, it is a beautiful place and the owners are super helpful & friendly.
