Catching A Bus In Honolulu

Hi All!

Was hoping to see how easy it is to get around via bus within Honolulu/Waikiki. We are hoping to avoid having to hire a car.

Ideally, we would like to visit the Ala Moana Center, Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head via bus. I'd also like to see the Premium Outlets but have heard there's a $5 return shuttle you can take to these from Waikiki.

Does anyone happen to know the numbers of the busses we can catch? We're staying on Kuhio Ave? Are there any direct busses?

Thanks in advance,

Lisa

On the right hand side of the page are top questions about Honolulu - and there is a link for "taking the Bus" - should answer your questions and there are maps in many stores downtown that should be a big help. :)

#20 & #42 go to Pearl Harbor. Those two routes, plus buses have signage "Ala Moana" will all go to Ala Moana. Think that is now #23 that goes to Diamond Head.

Go to www.TheBus.org for current info. Concierge at your hotel can usually answer most bus questions.

Can't answer outlet question as we never shop while in Honolulu.

Pearl Harbor #20 or #42 with no need to transfer. Those two will also go to Ala Moana Center & through downtown Honolulu (Chinatown/Historic Honolulu and Aloha Tower). See other choices from Waikiki to Ala Moana Center on the link below.

#23 to Diamond Head Crater.

Same map, but bigger. Also has an Ala Moana map insert.

Welcome to the forums my fellow Aussie. :) Jervis Bay here, not too far from you.

I've been putting together a blog with plenty of Aussie centric links which might be worth a look for you - there are links to trip reports, common shopping questions. It is a work in process, I am adding more links every day.

Google Transit will give you the bus routes and numbers, along with the times. Just input your start and end points. Depending on how long you are visiting, you might want to buy a four day pass for $25, or a monthly pass for $60...otherwise, it's $2.50 for adult fare. The four day passes are readily available but the monthly ones have to be purchased at select locations (Foodland at Ala Moana is one of them). There are bus schedules on some of the busses and at the library on Kapahulu, and I've seen them at the McDonald's on Kuhio in the past (not sure about now).
