Best Bus, Trolley or Hop-on/off option for Honolulu

We will will be in Hawaii in August visiting the islands of Kauai, Big Island and Oahu.

We are looking for recommendations for the best way to visit downtown Honolulu and it's sights.

We are renting a car for several days, but don't want the hassle of driving and parking in the city.

We are looking at the bus or trolley opitions

You could always take the free Hilo Hattie trolley if your intent is just to have somone drive you around a loop of downtown. They have stops all over and go out to their main store on Nimitz and the Ala Moana mall as well.

It depends where you want to go and what you want to do. "The Bus" (name of the award-winning public transportation system) has the most options and covers the most ground for really getting around.

If you want a quick tour or some shopping the trolley would be OK.

Where do you want to go? Start there ... what does the trick?

Iolani Palace? Kawaiaha'o Church? Kamehameha Statue? Honolulu Academy of Art? Are you including the Aloha Tower in Downtown? I'd rather drive to the BIshop Museum, for sure ... and include the Punchbowl and or Tantalus Drive/Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Wayside.

I would skip the Hilo Hattie bus! They dump you in their store!

The Trolley is not as efficient as the city bus, nor is it air-conditioned. You'll suck up ALOT of exhaust in the process, and they are often over-packed with international tour groups.

The double-decker? Seems way too expensive to me. I have seen them around town ... generally pretty empty.

My suggestion would be www.TheBis.org and that is only $2.50 one way and you can get a transfer good for another 3 hours. Clreanest most efficient bus system we have ever seen. We have been all over the island using only TheBus.
