First time to Oahu...rent car or join a tour group?

Considering Oahu as part of our honeymoon. We would like to relax and sightsee without the stress of lots of traffic/driving. Should we use public transportation or find a tour?

"We would like to relax and sightsee without the stress of lots of traffic/driving." You answered your own question A tour. And I will ask you, what is it you really want to know but didn't ask? Chuck.

Need more info as to how long you will be there, where you are staying and what do you want to do and see.

I suppose I did! I guess my real question is how bad is the traffic? Am I worried about nothing?

I travelled with my parents a few years ago to Maui and the Big Island. We drove everywhere on our own with little difficulty.

I'm just wondering how Oahu will compare

Your research will show a large variety of escorted tours available, exploring much of the island of Oahu and the most popular attractions especially popular with first time visitors. Most of them have pick up and drop off locations at the major Waikiki hotel/resorts. So, yes if you don't want to drive yourself, you can see a lot without having to do that. Other popular attractions in Honolulu not covered with escorted tours are accessible by taxi or the public BUS. We have rented cars and booked tours over our many years of visits to Honolulu/Waikiki. Renting a car when traveling with friends has been really fun, along with the independence of stopping and going on your own schedule. On the flip side, we have enjoyed letting someone else navigate the traffic on escorted tours and have met some interesting people from all parts of the world. Enjoy!

It's a relatively small island with lots of people. The traffic can be heavy and congested at all times of day.

We've done it both ways. My husband doesn't like to rent a car while on Oahu because it's too congested, and add to that the parking fees at hotels can add up. Most things can be booked with tour groups or the bus. It's not as easy as Maui or the Big Island, but it can be done. The times we have rented a car, we've only really used it for a day or two.

We will be staying in one of the Hilton Vacation club properties. We'd like to see the main tourist attractions, but would also like to see some of the beauty that Oahu has to offer.

I loved Maui and the Big Island and am worried that Oahu will not compare. We will be visiting one of those two islands as well.

The best way to enjoy Oahu is to rent a car the entire time & get out & see the island.

Read the Top Questions on the right side of the page. Driving tours, websites, maps etc.

I would suggest that public transportation is a good way to go to Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Chinatown, downtown.

But if we want to go island sightseeing, we rent a car for one or two days that we want to use it right near your hotel. You live in Pittsburg and are worried about traffic? It really should not be a problem for you.

Just keep an eye out for the Aussies and Kiwis that are coming straight at you because that can't remember that we drive on the right side of the road. I'm convinced that is why there are so many one way streets in Honolulu. It kind of keeps them out of trouble.

But if you run into one, they are some of the nicest people you will meet in Hawaii.

Have a great trip, and relax !

Aloha

Hi Squonk

We are two of those Aussies that placebets talks about, lol. After 5 weeks on the USA mainland in 2012 we stopped in at Oahu for a week on the way back to Australia. We did a Circle Island Tour on one of those days which was great for first timers like us to get a feel for the place. On another day we hired a car and drove around the island ourselves, stopping longer up at the Northern Beaches and Haleiwa, snorkelling in Hanauma Bay and just taking a bit more time to stop at some places than we had on the tour. We caught the bus to Pearl Harbour, downtown Honolulu and to Diamond Head.

Although my husband drove quite a bit in previous 5 weeks (including LA &San Francisco) and didn't have too many problems I never really felt at ease driving on the "wrong side of the road" (and I was just a passenger).

The only time we seemed to forget was when coming out of car parks etc - we seemed to divert back to "our" side of the road. Never had any issues though - US drivers are a lot more tolerant than drivers in Western Australia. A good GPS is a must.

Anyway whatever you decide, there are some great places to see - enjoy. We are planning another trip there in September and can't wait.
